i did not have one of the giant morrissey posters up in my college dormroom, though the girl across the hall from me did and the guy next door did too.
At least he's done something interesting.

I cannot figure out what was so good about the Smiths. I can sorta get the Cure, I understand contemporaries like the Jesua and Mary chain and can even see some fleeting value in the Souxie and Banshees garbage, but the Smiths always struck me as a listless flat soft-rock garage band.

They fall into what I'd call the "Steely Dan" category - things people and critics say I should like, but I just don't get.

FWIW, even I'm shocked.
If I didn't actually see the real Amazon URL on that link, I'd think it was written by the same guy who wrote the Rick Moranis death story.

"For What its Worth?" Oh, God, won't someone please think of the children???

I'm really psyched to hear another take on "Crossroads".

Blame Canada!

If I had a dollar for every doctor I know who told me about how he was going to make a killing buying into his buddies (restaurant, club, real estate deal, etc...), and consequently lost his balls on the deal, I could eat a nice sushi dinner for two - with loads of drinks.

I have yet to meet a group of people so easily separated from their money, yet so absolutely certain they're "one-upping" everybody they negotiate with. A healthy number are like partners in law firms - just stroke their ego, listen to them talk and smile and tell them they're right and they're in the palm of your hands.

Just don't litigate business issues between docs. Living hell. Worst clients ever. "Alligator arms" when it comes to paying.

Hank, I think we're going to need a fuller description on this one. Thanks.

What am I missing?
I wonder whether some people are into the "event" itself - when was the last time there was a state funeral like this? It's a moment in history. Plus, all the flags on the Memorial Bridge look pretty.

* No good alternative to the split infinitive here.
I would suggest "to fund meritless litigation systematically." Or, "against this plan to set up a system which funds meritless litigation." Perhaps the "which" should be "that."

There is no problem with Ty's split infinitive, and I think his original version reads better than your alternatives. In your second alternative, the "which" should indeed be a "that." Restrictive vs. descriptive and all that.

I recently picked up a Steely Dan CD that was on the floor of my car and stuck it in the CD player.

Something has happened to me since the last time I listened to it. I could not help but think that it sounded like the worst Lite FM radio crap I had ever heard.

I should have known you had this book memorized, chapter and verse. Has any of it worked for you yet?

Didn't think so.

One thing that has always baffled me is how Steely Dan fans insist on describing Steely Dan's music as "subversive," when I always thought a better adjective was "catchy."

Thanks for the which/that clarification.

I was not opining that his original version didn't read better, I was pointing out that it was possible to simultaneously avoid splitting the infinitive and not sound utterly stupid.

Note I'm not asterisking my split infinitive and saying it can't be avoided. My infinitive is split, and I like it that way.
