I was with him until he said "fear." Fear is an important part of disciplining a child. When one of my kids makes a mad dash for a busy street, it's my job artificially to create the sense of imminent danger in terms em can understand, because traffic is hard to understand, but Daddy suddenly yelling isn't.
The other day one of the little Grinches dropped a penny into the cigarette lighter in the back seat of our car. (Why they put one there in a family vehicle, I'll never understand. I guess the spoiled kids need somewhere to plug in the Nintendo.) The resulting spark was pretty spectacular, but I don't think the kid thought anything more than "hey, cool." If I'm not there to scare the bejeezus out of him, he'd never know how close he got to getting hurt.
As TM knows, a child can fear a certain tone of a parent's voice without fearing the parent. Walking that line to create a proper sense of danger is just plain good parenting.
I say no to hot saucing. It's a waste of good hot sauce.

I am completely 100% opposed to hitting children. Another good reason for me not to be a parent, I suppose.

Yep. Your kids never mouth off when I come over during work hours.

Now I'm hungry
Reading the board this afternoon has made me want to strip down and pour hot sauce all over my body and make the Hamm twins lick it off of me as punishment for them not winning team gold.

Let me just warn you, from personal experience, that hot sauce in certain delicate places hurts like a motherfucker.

Can't you picture that dude and his shaved-and-gelled buddies at some Jersey club? That's the image I got.
Though she's probably underage, and at the risk of sounding wonkish, the Romanian chick who won the balance beam looked like she could be very, very naughty.

Darling, how many times have we discussed this? I have no problems with your cooking in the nude, but please, refrain from scratching yourself while handling the food. It's quite unsanitary.

I bet you don't spend much time at the playground.
On Sunday, I saw a little girl kick a much, much smaller child and take his toy. When the mother went to speak calmly and softly to the offending child about how to treat other people, the kid screamed "Shut up!" in her face and then smacked the mother across the chops as hard as she could. I was floored, but I kept my eyes on this scene to see what kind of smacketh was about to be layeth down. The mother walked over to the father and whined to him about her behavior and the dad told her that it wasn't very nice and if she did it again, they would have to go home.
Uh...What? That is public, pull-the-pants-down-spanking behavior.

Good, the pain will be my punishment for thinking such naughty thoughts about those wholesome little corn-fed, muscle-bound, double-jointed hotties when I should be innocently watching the Olympics and patriotically rooting for my American team to squash the Chinese commie bastards.

I was just thinking the same thing. It was pretty clear to me that pissing off my dad was a bad thing, though I don't remember him actually ever being the one to mete out punishment.
In my high school we had a dean of discipline who doubled as the football coach. He was terrifying, and I think we were better behaved for it. No one wanted to be sent to him. I don't know what he actually did to students, but I know they looked rather traumatized afterwards. We were a very polite bunch.

Now I'm Mean
Reading the Board this afternoon makes me want to pour hot sauce in the eyes of the down-the-hall-calling, flip-flop-wearing, speakerphone-abusing, special-ringtone-loving creature who makes my life an aural hell every day of the workweek.

Just wait until they get older.
The voice no longer does the trick once they get old enough to note that there is no connection between the voice and any real consequences.
I don't do the hot sauce for the reasons already noted; the last thing anybody needs is some kind of connection between food and punishment (or reward). You can't hit them because all they learn is to hit. The end result is that your arsenal is pretty much empty except for grounding or no tv/nintendo/whatever. But that just leaves the little bastards around getting on your nerves.
Sometimes I think I might get better results if I give the kid the xanax and send myself to my room.

Amen. There's just something about his lips that really gets my motor running. And I'm totally with Anne on the low-rise suits. When they're not so great from the neck up, it's really thoughtful of them to give us so much else to look at.
I've also been enjoying the sprinters' singlets (or whatever you call them), especially when they show the replays in slow motion.
Ah, the Olympics. Good times.

Ahh, but just think how much healthier the old ticker would be if your parents had beaten you with sausages when you misbehaved.
