Tell that to all the people who go on Oprah, Dr. Phil, etc. because they are drowning in debt!
Even if you pay cash, it can still be dangerous. And I say this as a semi-recovering "stuffoholic."

I have no Elmos, but I have every Thomas the Tank Engine train that every rode the rails of Sodor, including rarities like Satchel, Andrei and Juan.

Or swimming pools, which are allegedly more dangerous than guns in the home.

Wow! You are right, point ceded.
This reminds of the time I gave up porn after Ted Bundy denounced it.

Oh, for Christ's sake. I'm not staff, and my position doesn't "require" St. John everyday, either. Or, like, ever. You know, back when I was 23 and fresh out of law school, I was taken aback at times meeting people I knew had "made it" in one fashion or other and how, surprisingly, they didn't always shop Madison. Then I grew up, learned that a) life can be complicated, b) family-home stuff is very expensive and c) as much as I love Bottega, I would be irresponsible for buying it. And then I moved out of NYC and to another part of the country where there is a huge amoun t of wealth and one of my wealthiest friends here (think hundreds of millions) downsized to an Acura when the economy downturned because it was the prudent thing to do (and also for appearances' sake, as people around here are, generally speaking, understated beyond belief). He and his three daughters - whom he opted to send, on a case-by-case basis, to public school rather than his top-private-school alma mater because it suited them better - and his lovely wife seem less than hung up on shopping at Parisian boutiques, which they could well afford to do. True, it's a different aesthetic, and I am utterly not sure I'd life their way in their situation, but not "needing" to dress a certain way has nothing to do with being staff.

You do like to overreact don't you? There's a lot of room between WalMart and all the designers and spendy brands of cosmetics and hair care you talk about. You're the one who was thinking about buying $135 foundation.
But yes. I do think that if you have to work OT to have reserves for kids sports fees, vet bills and car repairs, you are spending too much money on your wardrobe etc.
I know what NYC is like; I used to work there. But I also know that the wardrobe "expectations" of paralegals is a lot less than of attorneys even in TCOTLCEU.** You aren't out marketing*** and I can assure you that so long as you look reasonably professional, neither the attorneys you work for nor the ones you see at closings think you are smarter or nicer or more attractive when you are wearing Pink shirts than if you were wearing a similar style from a less expensive store.

***I agree with Nox4 that even for attorneys, designer clothes is not a requirement. I noted marketing because people judge success (and therefore whether they should hire you) on various criteria and some may feel they need to dress higher end to look successful. Minnesota is also one of those understated places where clients and potential clients may be put off by conspicuous consumption.

I was not a big fan of any of the Juan socks, and as such did not pay attention to what they posted, but I trust your P.o.V.

Maybe since I post on the fly I wasn't clear. I have to do the OT anyway, the nominal amount allocated to my shopping is carefully planned and cautiously executed. So it is not because of my shopping I am required to do OT, but that is an ancillary result of my exertions.
The "spendy spendy" things I prefer aren't even all that. Most TCOTU-ers are all into Bendel and only shopping at Saks and on Madison. I've mentioned I like Ann Taylor and Banana and Anne Klein, Talbot's and Brooks that is pretty standard issue work middle of the road professional attire. Nothing is extreme and I don't buy that Celine bag I so covet. I do shop sale and we do do outlet. And I do like to discuss it here since, I actually have had some pretty awesome feedback from some knowledgeable posters.
That being said that I do note that people who are truly wealthy are often not flashy and quite low key. i've always been hard wired to gravitate towards certain things. It is what I enjoy and to be frank I may smart at being criticized about it but it pleases me on some minor aesthetic level. And Didi Gluck in Marie Claire said in this month's issue that she tried SK-ii spray on foundation and fell in love. it went on like buttah.

Really? Is this true? I just don't see many depressed teens killing themselves with the swimming pool. But I guess wandering toddlers more than make up for that.

Is TCOTU limited to Manhattan? Or just people in the top 10% of income in the greater COTU?
