It's everywhere. The WaPo had a front page article on the rush-hour-from-hell on Halloween, what with all the parents rushing home to take the little ones trick or treating. They identified a number of people who were taking the day off, er "working from home", to avoid the mad rush.

That is indeed the article I was referring to, and it is not really interval training.

Re: heart rate monitor, my gym has I think 4 or 5 types of elliptical trainers. I use one of the three that varies resistance AND has the "crossramp" or whatever that varies height AND allows me to check my heart rate, which is how I can tell I'm doing the same workout (in terms of strides per minute, height and resistance) but my heart rate is not going sky-high like it had been. To me, that is progress. It does go really, really sky-high during the "sprint" intervals. I usually do five at a normal-fast pace, one at a total all-out sprint, then keep going but slow until I feel human again (which is like a minute at first, but then gets longer), then go medium until 4 or 5 min are up, then do another minute all-out, repeat.

I don't know what it's doing vis-a-vis fat burning, but it really has had a much more dramatic effect on my heart rate responses than any other time I've started exercising.

None of this is to say that I'm like an exercise superhero or in shape or anything; I just find it interesting how quickly I notice relative changes in my heart rate and stuff, in connection with working out.

I think that it's safe to say that there are definitely Pilates cultists. In fact, I think there are a few off-shoot sects, too.

The reformer is a machine resembling a medieval torture device in appearance. There are a variety of springs and pulleys and ropes that you use to move a platform around while you're in various positions on or above the machine.

I paid I think $60 for an hour of semi-private (2 students, one instructor) lessons in Dallas, with the machines. In a couple weeks, I'm getting a free private session at my gym; I may start doing it again. Not sure how much it costs. I liked the semi-private because one-on-one is really just not necessary, but it doesn't seem to exist at my gym, unfortunately. Group classes always seem like they are too big for the instructor to be keeping track enough of everyone's exact positions.
