If this were WWII and the bunker were outside Berlin, I think we'd all find it a little odd of the soldier to say, "Greetings from President Truman." With so many others who actually died for that cause, it would seem anticlimactic. It would have been something more manly, patriotic, and American, like "Uncle Sam told me to kick your Hun ass" before pulling the pin and diving into the foxhole.
McArthur (sp?) used to have his name invoked like that. Truman, no.

I think it has something to do with a soldier's perception of leadership.

I used the word "fiction," and he unsuccessfully goaded me into trying to say more. Not an edifying moment, but I did manage to unload some riverfront property in Salto del Guaira.

Whaddaya mean? Truman had the guts to drop the Bomb on those slants, and saved a bunch of GIs. He was a good feller.

(Your ability to see every situation as yet another way in which Bush bestrides the world like a Colossus is getting to be a little too cute.)

I will go on record saying that what the American soldier said was neither bad nor wrong, but it was a missed opportunity to credit the supposedly international effort to subdue post-war Iraq and find SH. I believe it also demeans the purpose of our being there. But, I'm sure it was fun to say, esp. if the soldier is a Bush voter.

I will go on record (oo, fun phrase) as saying that my comments went more to what some nineteen-year-old soldier would think of to say in the heat of the moment. Likely the first thing to cross his mind, because, unlike Truman, I think Bush has more of a commander persona to the kid soldiers.

Really, a "missed opportunity to credit the supposedly international effort to subdue post-war Iraq and find SH"? You mean, "Kofi says hi"? Or maybe "President Chirac would be here to welcome you if he could, sir"? You're trying to write dialogue that wouldn't even pass muster in your reality shows. When you're here parsing the words that soldier said as he discovered SH, I think you're making a point you don't really want to make.

Actually, the Germans came up with this first, about sixty years ago.

More.

There is no truth to the hoary myth that the English were developing a longbow that could shoot around corners but abandoned it after the Battle of Poitiers.

I'm sorry. I'd been led to believe there were other nations that were helping us --- er, President Bush --- in post-war Iraq. Something about "coalition forces." But I listen to NPR, and maybe they were talking about Italian-American and Spanish-American and British-American soldiers and were too ashamed to say the "American" part.
