I'd write a big, fat check to my undergrad university and send it along with a nice letter describing how much I enjoyed the experience of going there, and how much more valuable my education from there was than any other.

And I'd cc my law school's dean.

But perhaps I'm just irritated that my law school seems to time the arrival of their monthly plead for money to coincide with my loan payment.

Of course, that assumes that a government sponsored entity can and should sell lottery tickets in good faith as a general matter.

There's a law in Virginia that bans advertising the lottery with a "main purpose" to "induce people to play" (or something). So, instead, the ads have to be educational, as in: The Virginia lottery now offers a great game with huge prizes, and we thought you should know that, as a citizen, and a person who might want to know that kind of thing.

I still haven't figured out what exactly the difference is. Perhaps that's because the sole purpose of advertising is to induce a purchase.

Do what I do... Send THEM a letter hitting them up for $$$ to pay my loans off. I understand their need and everything, but I'll contribute to someone else's education once I finish contributing to my own.

And as everytime there's a massive lottery payout, I've already spent a lot of the money before they've picked my numbers.

This time around, it looks like I'm going to be a real estate mogul, though I'll probably be starting up film studio too. Assuming that paying off every one in the family's (there will be DNA testing, btw) debt and the party where I try to recreate the Tyco event in the Mediterranean (complete with pissing ice sculptures) with everyone I know shouldn't dent too much in the estimated $75 M cash payout, I'll be buying/building homes/property in Tuscany or Spain, Mexico, the Bay Area, central Texas, and New Mexico. I also have my eye on a few old buildings here in Houston that would be expensive to renovate, but very cool when done.

I'll then retire to do charity work, write a bit, and move my household every few months to another of my homes.

Your plans with $75M cash?

Those must be big napkins.

I would pay off the debt of some (not all) family members. Then, I'd buy a house in Tuscany and one in Palm Springs, a weekend cottage in Lake Geneva, and a houseboat for the Caribbean.

I'd set up a scholarship fund for kids who get accepted to good schools but don't get the financial aid to go to them.

I'd buy the Food Network, fire Emeril and give Alton Brown his time slots.

I'd build a kitchen in my house that rivals the Iron Chef set and a 35-foot barbecue rig, with a pickup to pull it. I'd spend much of the summer going to barbecue cookoffs.

I'd buy a Mamiya 7ii and learn how to use it.

I'd play golf three times a week.

I'd learn Italian, French, and Spanish. In Milan, Nice, and San Sebastian.

Now would be a good time for TM to pipe up and kill your impossible dreams, depressing everyone else in the process.

I have only played the lotto once. Before the drawing, there was a possibility, however remote, that I would win. I siezed on that possibility and started making plans with the money similar to the ones outlined above. I tinkered with them, improved upon them, and they started becoming more and more concrete in my mind. I woke up happy the next few mornings just based on this possiblity. My anticipation was palpable.

When the winning number were revealed, and they were not my numbers, I was crushed. It was as if someone had reached into my pocket and robbed me of tens of millions of dollars. I have not played the lotto since. Too depressing.
See, I play every week for the simple pleasure of playing that head game.

The missus and I have talked about this. The only hitch is that we don't want to move to rural Utah.

I'd buy up all the outstanding debt on my former client's properties and fuck with him.

This would rock. Alton's grilled lamb recipe/show is just about the best thing I've ever tasted.

I'm not sure the Toys are really appropriate in rural Utah.

That was the very purpose of my post. I wanted to give the little fucker equal time. But then, he probably won't take the bait. Because he doesn't give a crap.

And don't be so bitter. I didn't ask you to develop a crush on me.

The loss of the NZ cottage was too much.
