Sure they can. I have a friend who at last count had something like 23 distinct personalities, though she's really not sure how many there are. Sometimes a lot of them are "awake" and sometimes just a few. She had a brain injury a few years ago after slipping and falling in the tub and "lost" some of the personalities all together. More recently, she's had some emotional trauma in her life, and the personality that I first met in 2000 isn't around as much anymore. The one that is present remembers some of the stuff that happened in the past, but it wasn't from her point of view.

One of her personas is allergic to shellfish, but the others aren't. One of them knows a lot about gardening, but the others don't. I've been talking to her when in mid-conversation she "switches" and suddenly she's someone else. That other person was there the whole time, but she wasn't in control. The personalities are all different ages, and it can be disconcerting when the last time you talked you were talking to a seven year old and the next time you talk, you're talking to a 40 year old.
