I apparently underestimated how big a group of dipshits these people are. While the debates will be entertaining, I cannot vote for someone who doesn't live here. Sorry, Alan.
Mark it down, in November I will be voting for the first time in my life for a Democrat not named Daley.

Its quite sad really. Now that both parties have been almost entirely disgraced at any objective, I'm amazed that the Democrats were clever enough to find and pull an apparently clean Obama out as the new generation. The Republicans look around, and all they have is Edgar and Thompson in the rear view mirror, Hastert off on the access road, Fitzgerald retirin and amovin on to VA, and nobody waiting to take over. And Thompson has had his share of stinky associations come out the last year or so.
BTW, I'd beware of anybody from Alsip or any other suburb that borders the 19th ward. That is suspicious in and of itself.
It would only suck more if Obama was one of the regular Illinois Democrats. As it is, he'd be smart to keep his distance from the whole crowd. Remember how Hynes ran his sonny against him? Yeah, Barack owes the Chicago dems diddly, and thats what he should give them when he wins.

Why are the Illinois Republicans doing this? It seems like a waste of the party's resources to pump any effort into the Senate campaign, when I'm certain there are house and local races that are more competitive and could use the party's support.

It does seem weird--just leave Ryan's name on the ballot, and if no one votes for him, so what?

They shouldn't have turned on Ryan in the first place. He's the first pol ever to go down from a no-sex sex scandal with his own wife. Sure, it was embarassing and good for a laugh, but was it really that bad? It was a divorce allegation, for pete's sake. He'd lose and lose big, but the whole selection process since he withdrew has been a total farce.
They have to put some resources into the race because if they get trounced and demoralized in the top 2 races on the ballot (as it looks like will happen here), their voters could stay home and they could lose even more congressional and state house races than they would otherwise lose as a result.

"li'l-known third category"? Does category really have fewer than 4 syllables and I've been pronouncing it wrong all these years?

The scare quotes make you say it faster, and thus it is only seven syllables. Besides, you would be well-advised to heed Hank's observation about meter Timmies. The last line was basically a nature reference, so why hate?

Careful, Atticus. Though posted as fringe, clearly this was in his TaxWonk persona. Simple login error, I'm sure. Anyway, unless you've read Middlesex you might just want to delete your post and put up a smillie.

Sticker Shock
Montrose resident Karen Clouse figured she lived in one of the city's best neighborhoods for sporting a bumper sticker touting John Kerry. She thought wrong.
Clouse's Toyota Corolla -- with its "Librarians Against Bush" sticker -- drew attention two weeks ago from a giant pickup truck that tailgated and even lightly bumped her, she says. Then, on July 27, she walked out to her car and saw two of the tires slashed and the bumper sticker partly ripped off, with half of it crumpled on the ground.
"The police officer who took my report said, 'I'm voting for Bush, but that's just not right,' " says the 32-year-old master's candidate in library science. "He asked if I was going to put another on, but I just can't afford to. I had to miss a day of work and replace two tires."
Hey, Clouse -- stop with all this GOP-bashing, man. You ever think that maybe someone just has something against librarians?
"That might be true, except that my husband's John Kerry sticker has been ripped off his car, too," she says.
Oh. Better just vote Republican, then.

A Jaguar down the street had a black background bumper sticker with white letters "FREE MUMIA!"
One night, I magic marker colored in the "e"s then used white out to add a "y." But I wouldn't fuck with the tires.

That's exactly how I felt. So the guy has strange sexual appetites... so what? Were Nelson Rockefeller, Eisenhower, FDR or Clinton in any way compromised by the fact that they carried on affairs during their terms? Ryan should have said "Look, I had some personal issues, but the important thing is, I was always monogamous. And I've seen a shrink and have worked through my 'appetites.'" Dumping a guy just before the finish line almost guarantees disaster.

I just key the cars with Kerry stickers discretely as walk by. I only do it to the mercedes, jags, and other limousine liberal cars.

"Free Mumia" is just about tantamount to saying "Idiot on Board." How the movement managed to jump from "Mumia should not have gotten the death penalty" to "Free Mumia" is a lesson in just how effective changing semantics in the midst of a furious movement can change the whole issue without anyone noticing.
The original movement to get him off death row was based on the idea that he was acting in self defense, acknowledging that he shot the cop while the cop was shooting at him, which the evidence suggests. It also focused on the facxt that his trial was really somewhat a farce, presided over by a hanging idiot named Judge Sabo, who is widely considered one of the dumber and most aactivist judges to ever take the bench in this town. The original Mumia folks fought with real evidence. This new "Free Mumia" crowd has floated the theory that a third party shot the cop, but it hasn't been able to substantiate the claim.
I personally think there's no premeditation based on what I've read and that he deserves to do life. But freeing him? Come on... these 16 year olds need to put down the RATM records and get a grip.
