Wow, given that it appears to have been reissued nearly 10 years ago and is still in print, I can see why wanker would have had such a hard time finding it, especially since online bookstores make it ridiculously easy to find and buy even OUT-of-print books.

I'd be real impressed if it was a flip-top cell phone.

Thursday Next & Question for Anglophiles
I just finished "The Well of Lost Plots." There is nothing like the Thursday Next Series to make me feel as though I haven't read anything important. [For those who haven't read one, the plots/characters of classic literature populate the books and often drive the plot.]
I just read "The Little Prince" (how did I get through childhood without discovering this?) and will have to catch up on more missed literature after I read "Something Rotten."
One thing troubled me throughout the book that those of you who know how to spell in British could help me with: Is "mispeling vyrus" the correct British spelling for what would be "misspelling virus" in American?

Moore sucked in AFGM, but it wasn't necessarily her fault. The role sucked. Blame Hollywood and Broadway. When AFGM was performed on the stage in rep (the story goes) all the JAG officers were male. When they took it to Broadway in 1989, they made Galloway a woman in re-write (the story continues). That's what they later filmed. Tom Cruise replaced Tom Hulce, and Josh Malina continued his long career of appearing in whatever Sorkin was writing at the moment.
Now, my source on this is shaky; maybe there was always a woman in Sorkin's script even in rep. I never saw the stage version myself. But it has some credence because the "mandatory" sexual tension that the film director added between Galloway and Kaffee was completely wrong for the story. It's a sour note. It goes nowhere (because it's not a romance; it's just hanging there) and it completely cheapens the experience of being a woman in the military. I suppose it gave an opening for some deliciously evil Jessup lines, but other than that it's just a dumb, dumb part. Introducing a dumb woman lawyer is uncharacteristically misogynistic for Sorkin. Consider the far better characterization of Felicity Huffman as a woman in a man's world in "Sports Night" (which borrows heavily from Holly Hunter's character from "Broadcast News," and that's a good thing). Mebbe Sorkin was simply atoning for AFGM's treatment of women. I think it's more that the Galloway part wasn't meant for a woman, whether or not Sorkin wanted it that way originally.
If Moore is to be judged, let it not be for flubbing this role. Judge her for Executive Producing "Austin Powers: Goldmember."

You're probably right. If they left Galloway a guy, the sexual tension between the character and Cruise's would have been much more believeable. See, e.g., the interplay between Maverick and Iceman. Cruise, for some odd reason, seems to have a thing for dressing up in navy uniforms and flirting with guys. NTTAWWT.

Hmm, this raises an interesting issue--do I like you b/c you are a foul-mouthed girl who likes football and poker, or am I really just attracted to men? Does anyone have NFH's number?

"Wow, I'm sexually aroused, Commander" has to be the single worst line of dialog written by Sorkin, ever. It is a turd amid glittering jewels. The idea that it was said first by "Pinto" Kroger redeems it somewhat.
