So, I was looking at paint this weekend, and what's the deal with the dark colors saying you have to use a special primer? What is this? Is it generic special primer, or does it differ depending on what dark color you use? How necessary is this? Like, in the kitchen I'd rather not have to buy a whole gallon of special just-for-the-red-color primer and a whole gallon of the color b/c there's not much to paint, and the gallon will probably allow 3 coats if necessary.

Red sucks at covering white. You need a lot of coats. Generally dark colors need multiple coats, b/c the white shows through. One way to save steps is to get the primer tinted. Saves one coat at least.

They mix the primer based both on what color you will be finishing with and also what color you will be covering. For example, we painted our previously-black front door fire-engine red. The primer was a sickly bubblegum pink, but it worked fine. You don't need the buy a gallon either: a good paint place can mix any quantity you need. For the door, above, I bought a quart each of the paint and the primer.

I bought a power sprayer over the weekend. That thing rocks. It covers everything in minutes. Next time, however, I will have to remember to use plastic to cover the areas I do not wish to paint, such as windows, the carpet, and my tv.

If you just use a creamy white, less tinted primer, you'll lighten the color you are putting on top slightly, which you can adjust by using a shade slightly darker than you intend. If you're doing it yourself and don't have a feel for it, you're better off using their primer if having exactly that color is critical to you. But if you have a feel for it, you can even do something radical and use a bright white primer and cover until you get the right shade (assuming you can apply the paint evenly from the first coat on).

When you choose your color, make sure you worry about lighting - colors can look radically different in different lighting. I've painted rooms so that the paint shade varies depending on the lighting, so that the whole room looks the same shade even though its not.

Now you are just stressing me out. This is my debut painting experience (well, OK, I did once before but I was heavily supervised and it was a long time ago) -- I am not ready to try anything fancy. The kitchen gets little natural light so I will just paint it all the same color. I will be putting up little sample patches to make sure the colors I've tentatively picked out don't look just WRONG, but I'm not getting different colors for different walls.
