We have a major thoroughfare here called San Felipe. A large number of the local population calls it San Phillip-ee. Grates on my nerves every single time I hear it that way. I've taken to pretending that I don't know what they're talking about until they pronounce it correctly.

I have issues with Houston street in New York too.

That's not named after Sam Houston, though, is it?

Ok, this is not to detract from my excitement at an ABBA-hottorso-me threesome, but my friend just told me that a guy she is going out on a blind date with this Friday just said that he'd pencil her in for 8:00. Then he said - "shall we say an hour - an hour and a half?", like the date is like a meeting, or lunch. That struck me as very weird. I would like to at least leave the opportunity for getting lucky open, and not foreclose it right off the bat (unless I suppose he could be thinking quickie). hmm.

Enough of that. I get to see ABBA's TITS in an hour or so!
FUCK YEAH!!!!!! I have you penciled in until Thursday.

I don't like how Ryan Phillipe's last name is pronounced "phillip-ee". But I suppose that's the way he does it, so I shouldn't quibble. Still.

Nah, furgit it.

Is that like San Rafael (san rah-fel) or Des Moines (duh moinze)

Of course people have often asked me why Spokane is spelled with an "e" since that spelling would be spo-kane and not spo-can. And I just say, that's how the Indians wanted it.

Monticello St., Dallas. Not pronounced like Jefferson's home. Think Montisello.

THE most grating, bar none, is Goethe St. in Chicago.

The locals pronounce it "Gurdy."

If every there was proof that Chicago is really part of Greater Kansas.

People like it for 1 of 2 reasons. One is Jack N. There are a half dozen movies that would probably not have been made w/o him agreeing to be in it. This is one. The other reason is they had a naked old fat broad. That was "brave" and edgy.

But you sure got me with your plan to get photos of badass black men up on the board. That's probably the first time...oh wait. No. Typical lazy response is to find a funny looking black guy and say, "Hey, you're black. This is you!" You weren't even the first to invent this.

No shit. it killed the one I was going to suggest for you:

That's a major improvement. They used to pronounce it Go-thy.

Ethical question

Not necessarily - if #1 will be paid "less than 1/2 of what a firm would charge for a super jr. associate to do it," then he may actually get a pay raise. For example, the hourly billing rate for a first year associate here is more than 200% my gross hourly wage (assuming not-very-high annual billables). If #1 is more mid-level (I'm pretty sr.), and/or he is working a lot of hours, the difference would be greater.

BR(for the math-inhibited, I compared (A) first year billing rate vs. (B) my salary last year divided by 1750; A/B = approx. 2.1)C

It's still a bad idea, though. Nothing a mutual friend can do about it except stay out of it.

That pronunciation suggests they were at least trying to get it right at some poitn. It would be more annoying if they said it "Go thuh."

I've never heard this, and I used to live one block north of Goethe. Actually, even the bus drivers pronounce it correctly.
