There was rumor going around my camp one summer when I was in junior high that one of the girls had to go to the nurse because a hot dog broke off in her twat and she couldn't get it out again.

I never got confirmation on whether or not it was true, but I crossed "hot dog" off the list of food items I would experiment with.

No hotdogging? May I suggest this, then?

HELP--What in the hell do I do with her?

OK--probably none of you will even answer, or will just flame me, but hey, I'm looking for ideas and figured y'all might have something creative.

So, one of my best friends calls me a few weeks ago and confesses that her marriage is falling apart, her husband is purchasing firearms while getting angry, loud and arriving home late and drunk after work....she's considering leaving and can she come stay at my house...well, there's no room for me and her and her baby at my house, so I say OK, and evacuate the house and take up residence at my boyfriend's house and mother's farm, which I'm at all the time anyway...she kind of wanted space to be by herself and figure things out....so I gave her space. So she was there all last week and then this past friday she tells me she's "going home" for the weekend so her husband can see the baby. I'm kinda thinking "either it's safe there or it's not...either you need to get out of the house or you don't, but I ain't running a B & B here. I'm happy to move out of my house on which I pay the mortgage, pay the doubled electric bill because she's heated it up like a sauna and several hours worth of long distance calls to all her family and her husband"--so i stop by this weekend to drop off some stuff I bought for the house and she'd left for the weekend while leaving a baby sippy cup on my 100 year old Tibetan coffee table (lovely water ring) and dried juice spill all over my antique kitchen table. Sink full of dishes. I don't want to completely alienate this friend, but how do I say "if you're safe to go home on the weekends, you're safe to be there during the week...I'm happy for you to stay in my house if you need to get out of your house because you don't feel safe, but I feel a bit put off coming home and finding my house a disaster, it costing me money that you're here, and that my house is being used like a hotel."

I'm such an idiot for trying to help out in the first place. I never should have given up my house.

Oh, God, yes. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

You better believe it. One friend said "now you know why her husband is stockpiling firearms and yelling at her all the time"

I didn't even know 100-year-old Tibetans DRANK coffee.

But, she's one of your best friends? Suck it up, I guess. Ask nicely about her sense of when she's leaving, but . . .

This sounds like a job for Mister Rimmer, Host Extraordinaire of the Rude Fats. I think his secret was to give passive aggressive derisive looks when they hogged the furniture and to include a sell by date.

I thought I had an alpha dog until the puppy showed up.

The DD had spent a lot of time with another puppy before I got our puppy, so he was used to the idea and I had a chance to see how well he'd handle the situation before it became permanent. He LOVES the puppy now, and the adjustment period was about a day and a half. The only real suffering of her puppyhood (she's a year and a half now) was his dreads. She liked to pull on them a lot when she was teething, and he had this mullet look going for awhile. They look a lot better now.

Puppies will always be beaten up by the older dogs. It's part of socialization. So when the baby gets too close to the older dog when he's eating, he'll snap at her, and it will scare you but you shouldn't interfere unless it looks like he really may hurt her. That said, you don't want to terrify the little one, especially if they're different breeds. My pulik can't stand my sister's lab. He did a very good job of scaring the shit out of my puppy, and she's terrified of him now. They're never going to get along and breed personality has a lot to do with it. They don't get his retriever personality, and he doesn't understand their complicated rules to chase.

If you have a terrier, at the very least get another terrier. If you have a working dog, get another working dog. At least they'll speak the same language, if not with slightly different dialects. Dogs are social animals, and they like the whole pack thing, so the older dog is generally going to be ok with the baby, especially if you're reassuring him/her that the baby is part of the family. There may be some acting out, and definitely don't leave the baby alone with the older dog until she/he's a bit bigger and able to hold his/her own in the inevitable fight. My puppy is only 21 pounds, and the Displaced Dog is 34. As far as they're concerned, there's no difference. She attacks him all the time, and vice versa. He has issues over bones, she has issues over toys.

Of course, my dogs are freaks, so YMMV.
