Quiet is not a thing that Barry does. I would prefer that he be made an example of, though.
"Here, this guy did steroids. His girlfriend says so. His trainer gave him $10,000 arthritis creme and he's been miraculously healing from injuries for 10 years. And only now he is unable to heal from knee surgery which coincidently happened on the day of steroid testing. This man now walks in shame - his homeruns have an asterisk. He is now homeless and penniless. This is what steroids do."
I would prefer that scenario.

Will Barry Bonds shut the fuck up and take his asterisk? How is the media persecuting him? By reporting on him, by reporting on steroids, what? At least McGwire just ran away with his tail between his legs.

Barry Bonds is the lowest of the fucking low. He cheated and now he's using his family as the reason why the media has "finally brought him down." What a prick.
Hey Barry, your son is "suffering" because of what you did. All the media attention is because of the cheating. If you don't like the inferences drawn by all these questions, you shouldn't have used the juice. I didn't see you holding press conferences about how all of the adulation and press attention was benefitting your family when they wrote about your achievements and put you in the same category as Ruth and Aaron.
And imagine my surprise when I say the following: nfh was right. He's off the juice and now has to rehab the old fashioned way and that doesn't necessarily sound like so much fun to a 40 year old, I'm sure -- especially because when he gets back on the field, he's going to drop into the high-30s, low 40s hr range. I wonder if he's still on HGH, since I don't think that's covered by the drug/steroid policy. I thought that was the stuff that regenerated muscle and fixed your injuries, built and strengthened your muscles and improved your eyesight.
Whatever. He's off the first ballot. And the assumption that he cheated will follow him forever. I hope he retires and spends the rest of his nights awake pissed off at the world and himself.

Does anyone doubt that Babe Ruth, a man of questionable scrupples and insatiable appetites, would have been willing to use steroids, as long as it didn't interfere with his drinking?

HGH is covered by the policy, but it's not detectable through urinalysis. It's only recently been detectable through blood tests, but I don't think that they're actually doing those. That guy who took steroids as part of a "scientific" test (somebody posted the article here a few weeks ago) said that HGH was most helpful because of the recovery from injury and the improvement in eyesight.

It's such a stupid question, I don't think anyone, besides you, is asking it.

I don't think there's any doubt your hope will come true. That is one angry sumbitch.
The stupid thing is, he didn't need steroids to be one of the greatest outfielders of all time. Even before his late-career HR-binge, he was one of the top five LFs of all time. I recently watched a few of the games from that Pirates-Braves series in 1991 . . . he could do it all, and for such a young player he had a great feel for the game. Not like those other two douchebags in the outfield with him, Van Slyke and Bonilla.
By the way, how many other great outfields had a white guy in CF and two black guys in LF/RF?
Favorite OF of all time . . . George Bell in LF hitting the crap out of the ball, Lloyd Moseby in CF landing 200 hits a year, Jesse Barfield in RF throwing out suckers at 3B and winning a HR title. 1984-1988.
With McGriff, Fielder and Cliff Johnson at 1B/DH, Garcia/Liriano and Fernandez in the middle IF, Mulliniks and Iorg at 3B, Whitt and Buck Martinez platooning at catcher, and a fine pitching staff of Steib, Jim Clancy, Luis Leal, Jimmy Key, and Tom Henke and Mark Eichorn in the bullpen, and Bobby Cox managing, it's amazing this team never made the World Series.

Van Slyke didn't also play CF in St. Louis w/Vince Coleman and Willie McGee, did he?

TV rec
Last night I watched Veronica Mars and I can recommend it for anyone who's looking for a highly entertaining, intelligent show. The main character is an ass-kicking 17-year-old girl. I never got into Buffy, but it should appeal to the same type of audience.
I watch very little TV (hi, bilmore) and found this show to be worth an hour (no Tivo) of my life. Hard to believe from UPN, but there you go.
Also, flipping channels last night I caught a glimpse of that Constantine character on AI, and I was scared. barely, it really was like he was trying to use his eyes to impregnate me with his demon spawn! I felt sick, and yet I couldn't change the channel. Someone hold me.
Finally, I caught the last 10 minutes of the restaurant-opening Curb episode, and I think the last minute of that ep is some of the funniest TV I have ever seen. I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats. "Cock! Cock! Jism! Grandma! Cock!"
(Really, I watch very little TV. Last night I was sick.)

I was talking to my daughter about this last night -- she had seen his "curb interview" on ESPN, and was pretty pissed about how whiny and pathetic he was.
I think that it's a shame that a guy who is such a gifted athlete, a true student and fan of baseball (unlike most other current players, Bonds seems to appreciate the history of the game and the men who played before him), and a hard worker is (a) such a jerk, and (b) probably cheated.
In other news, my knuckler is dancing, baby, DANCING. Willie Randolph is holding on line one --- Mets in 7!
