It is possible, as I'm getting my info from the NY Times. But according to them, Time also was held in contempt (easily verified by a trip to dcd.uscourts.gov), because it failed to produce relevant documents in its possession (the notes). I don't think this is just a "give 'em up or you're fired" situation. Time, in fact, has defended itself vigorously, but (unlike Miller or Cooper) respects that the Supreme Court has ruled (or not, depending on your views of the significance of denying cert.) and it's over (pending the possibility of arguing changed circumstances).

That is not fair. You need to give Scientology more time. By 80AD many people had died because they were Christian, but I don't think many people had been killed yet in the name of Christianity. In order to kill people in the name of Religion you also need political control. They are clearly working on it, but Scientology has yet to take over any political entities (that I know of).

Technically he wasn't responsible. The booze makes schizophrenics crazy.

Have you guys heard that Urban myth that Heinlein, Asminov and Hubbard were all playing poker and they started talking about how crazy religoin is and Hubbard said that it would be really easy to start a religion. Everyone else was incredulous as to that boast, so Hubbard bet them that he could start a religion. He was supposed to uncover it as a fraud but he died before he got the chance.

Wouldn't that be great if it were true.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, sunshine and light, that's Christianity.

And very persecuted.

Ya'll should have countered with the (non-Christian) Heaven's Gate folk to demonstrate that cults are evil and should be destroyed.

Frankly the Scientologists scare the crap out of me. A freind of mine was married to one, and those guys are freaks. They go after anyone who speaks out against them, and they're well funded.

When I was working in Hollywood, the conventional wisdom was that people used to pretend to be Jewish to help their careers. Then people started going to Rehab to make connections. There were many dry movies (like the Phantom with Billy Zane) that were "substance free" so people pretended to be recovering drug addicts, even if they were not. Now people are pretending to be Scientologists to break in. Just ask Greta Van Sustren.

Actually I don't buy any of it. Obviously there is nepotism, but people in Hollywood would hire Charles Manson if they thought it would make them money. I don't think be a non-jewish, non-scientologist, non-recovering addict hurt my practice at all.

Were you responding to my sarcasm with sarcams, or did you not get that I was being sarcastic. I am still working on this subtle humor thing.

The bet with Heinlein has been pretty much debunked.

The Church took German publishers to court over the report that Scientology was a money making scheme. Rumors persist, though, that L. Ron Hubbard said several times that the best way to make a million dollars was to start a religion.

There's a huge anti-scientology movement on the web. If half of the stories are true, it's a really scary religion. I looked into it a bit when my friend was trying to get out of her marraige. There are stories of the Church going after people who left it and talked about it. They sue people all the time for revealing its material and texts. Basically, to move on to the next level of enlightenment, you have to pay to take their special courses.

Operation Clam Bake is the most comprehensive anti-scientology site out there. It's sort of fascinating to read about.

The next time you are downing drinks with me and Lester, rather than cavorting in the Grotto with Hugh and 6 blondes named Kerri, you may want to reassess.
