New Rankings!

Is this a ranking or a prediction? Epstein/Posner/Easterbrook have the same chane a sStarr, Ashcroft, and Bork, which is 0. Of course, they're not getting down to no. 12, which is why Gonzalez should be up a lot higher on the list.
I think Gonzalez is the pick. Edith Clement as dark horse.

Somewhere between the two although ultimately perhaps it is my advice and consent list.
You don't expect logical consistency from me, do you?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahaah.
Anyway, 2-3M sounds good now, but that's more like 1M (today's money) in 30-40 years. Of course, that's 1M more than Sebby will have.

Eh, either it is or it isn't. It's a drop in the bucket, either way. The big ones are the pension and 401(k).
re: 2-3 million, the retirement calculator shows that should be enough to let us live at about 75% of our pre-retirement standard of living (before taking into account our pensions and possible social security) until we're about 90, which seems decent enough for me.
If all else fails, we'll just sell our house, buy a motor home and cruise around the country living on nothing but love and ramen noodles. I'm sure paigow would be amused to see this.

well, you know how to dress up the ramen with a little 'coon meat, so not to worry.
It's not a problem we don't all confront in one way or another though--my worries about the value of $3m reflect my own personal worries.

And your response was "flood them with US culture" while Pony suggested the bomb.
People in the US can avoid US culture. Think of the off-the-grid folks, the home-schoolers, even the fundies who put blinders on their kids in wal-mart, so the most they can get is a hillary duff album.
You think fundamentalists living in tents in the desert are going to see a mcdonald's and drop their bombs to buy a big mac? And you think that's going to hurt recruiting? Frenchmen--never successful battlers, threw rocks and grenades through the windows of mcdonalds for years, and still resent imperialist american culture. why do you expect a portion of islam to be unable to do the same?
|
In this one post you answer the hard question- where to drop the bombs?

We won long ago. Bush is a fool to call his campaign a "war" on terror. The terrorists are like people throwing eggs at a parade going by. Sure, they're an annoyance, and they create temporary anger and disruption. But in the end, the western marketization of the world is going to trample Islam into something akin to Christianity and Judaism - a personal religious choice with no place in the state. We need to start bombing the Middle East with more Western culture. That shitass religion of theirs can't stand up to a flood of Grand Theft Auto, Hummers, Levis, MTV and HBO. Get these people on McDonalds and Budweiser and everything will work itself out.

Great advice, you are the Neville Chamberlain of your time.

The vast majority of Brits "rolled over" on Iraq about three years ago.
|
Some idiots anyway.
See this morning's comments from MP, Saddam payee, terrorist apologist and - in general - total fucking prick George Galloway:
Quote:
We extend our condolences to those who have lost their lives today and our heartfelt sympathy to all those who have been injured by the bombs in London.
No one can condone acts of violence aimed at working people going about their daily lives. They have not been a party to, nor are they responsible for, the decisions of their government. They are entirely innocent and we condemn those who have killed or injured them.
The loss of innocent lives, whether in this country or Iraq, is precisely the result of a world that has become a less safe and peaceful place in recent years.
We have worked without rest to remove the causes of such violence from our world. We argued, as did the Security Services in this country, that the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq would increase the threat of terrorist attack in Britain. Tragically Londoners have now paid the price of the government ignoring such warnings.
We urge the government to remove people in this country from harms way, as the Spanish government acted to remove its people from harm, by ending the occupation of Iraq and by turning its full attention to the development of a real solution to the wider conflicts in the Middle East.
Only then will the innocents here and abroad be able to enjoy a life free of the threat of needless violence

I think it's worked in some parts of the middle east. See, e.g., Dubai. That's not to say it will work everywhere.

From what I can tell, it seems like they're handling this remarkably well.
I've seen more than one brit pissed off about this comment though:

The war on terror goes on. I was most impressed by the resolve of all the leaders in the room. Their resolve is as strong as my resolve.

I agree with Pony as well. I think it needs to be a two pronged approach. Culture, and where we can, extraction of fundamentalists with bombs, guns, etc... You westernize the culture as much as possible, and this pushes the loons to the periphery. Where you shoot them. Of course, this is gross oversimplification, but you get the general idea.
The thing is, the problem is never solved until the House of Saud and the Iranian Mullahs fall. They horde the money and keep the people down. People run to extreme religion when they have no money. We have millions of young angry male Saudis. They aren't getting drunk, laid or rich. But they're watching the Royal Family do all three. I don't agree with the Neocon plan (its a stupid form of manifest destiny, and Irving Kristol might be the most overrated "thinker" in history). But we do need to force a change that gives the decent Saudis and Iranians an option to their noxious extreme religion.
If you wonder why I hate religion, take a look at the pictures coming out of London. I have never seen it do anything but inflict pain and division. In a world so fucking divided, do we really need to have that extra division? Why? Why the fuck do we need to be so fucking small minded?
Pardon that naive soapboxish last bit... I'm a little verklempt.

Asshole, does what I wrote sound like appeasement?
Keep listening to Hannity; you're getting stupider and funnier by the moment.
