Yeah, but remember --- you used to write letters to Norman Lear complaining that Archie was a good man and he should stop making fun of him.
I always figured you for a Jughead fan.

How Did I

... forget about the nitrous oxide?

My mother in law brought some chocolate whipped cream over last week, which I’ve been slowly eating from the canister over the past few days (stuff is really tasty). Last nite I hit the bottom of the can and sucked down the nitrous.

WAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAHWAH....

Jesus, how did I forget how perfect this drug was? The entire day - I mean every annoying second of it - ERASED. I stood there like a puddle until my wife walked in and kissed me hello, to which my response was a deep bass “Hey baaaabeeee.”

Note in to do list (written on hand): “SKS” (stop at kitchen supply store).
This may just be what I need to exit my present funk.

Jose Fucking Contreras. The guy is throwing 97 w/movement. For strikes.
He couldn't pitch in New York. New York = pressure. You better hope the problem was a combination of Mel Stottlemyre's inability to fix his mechanics, the stress of bringing his family over in a boat under cover of darkness and our general impatience. Because if it's baseball stress that did it (see: Kenny Rogers), he's cooked in the playoffs.

I hope he pitches well, though. I always liked him and was pissed off when we got rid of him. I felt like we gave up on him too early. (Big surprise that we did.)

I think that El Duque and Don Cooper (CWS pitching coach) got it into his head that he needs to throw strikes. He is finally challenging hitters. His stuff is nasty enough that he doesn't need to have perfect location.

None of this means that I'm not nervous that he's starting Game 1 of the ALDS. I think Ozzie* wants to go righty, lefty, righty, so he's having Buehrle start Game 2 instead if Game 1.

*completely insane

You know, I've heard this a million times -- that for some reason, pitching (well, playing maybe, but really, most often it's in the context of pitching) for the Yankees turns otherwise reliable-to-good pitchers into quivering masses of turd (see, e.g., K. Rogers, J. Contreras -- though I agree they should have given him more time, K.Brown, J.Weaver, J. Vasquez), and outstanding pitchers into less-than-outstanding, albeit reliable ones (e.g., Mussina, El Duque in his later Yankee years -- there are others, just can't think of any now). I guess there's no other explanation for it, but it seems such a flimsy excuse. And it happens all the time! Can anyone offer a more convincing explanation (other than the "pressure" of pitching in Yankee Stadium) for the performance discount?

Because big Stein buys the players at the peak of their career, and they inevitably will decline/regress to the mean. Meanwhile he pays them for their past performance for previous teams.

BTW, it strikes me as pretty harsh to say Mussina hasn't performed up to expectations, this year excepted. He's been a horse for years.

His problem in New York was that he didn't use and couldn't locate his fastball enough. Too many sliders, and everyone (and I mean everyone) was sittin' on it.

While that is often true, it's not always the case. Especially with the current examples (Contreras and Rogers) who both pitched better after they left New York.

And then you have Chacon. If he has a big playoff series, every Colorado, free-agent pitcher will be thanking him for their contracts for the next few years.

I agree. A model of consistency. He's like a contemporary Jimmy Key or David Cone. God, I loved those guys.

I agree that it's a little harsh, but I don't know that I mean he hasn't lived up to expectations (don't know what the expectations were); I'm just observing that he's not as dominant for the NYY as he was for the Orioles. Don't get me wrong -- I love him; he's reliable, which is key when you never know how the rest of the pitching staff is going to play. However, with the NYY, he has never been as completely dominant as he was when he played for Baltimore. That's all I mean about the performance discount. It seems to have turned one of the games top pitchers into a mere outstanding one. (I know; cry me a river.)
