I'd probably do A5 on top, two pair on bottom. I believe that is [the] house way b/c of the A. What would you do? Sometimes I disagree with [the] house way, but in this case, pair of 7s won't beat much anyway. If the dealer's been running cold though, I might split the pairs.

The house way is to do A-5 up top and two pair on the bottom. If the pairs were 8 or higher (9 in some jurisdictions) the house would split the pairs. In this case, I would play the house way unless the dealer is on fire and you just want to push.

It is definitely on the upswing popularity-wise. I think partially because of the general poker craze (hold 'em, etc.), though maybe your moniker has inspired 4 or 6 hapless lawyer-types to start playing too. When I started playing, maybe 4 years ago, it was 90% Asian players, one table per casino. Now there are 3-6 tables per casino and the types of people playing is much more diverse.

WHen I picked it up in 1998, it was more like three tables (or more at bigger or downtown casinos) but they werent always adjacent. The Frontier, god rest its soul, had a sweet three buck table that I ruled in law shcool. I would say it was like half to two thirds Off the Boat Chinese people. The hardcore, skinny, chiansmoking kind. I always played at Barbarry Coast- my favorite casino.

Agreed with how the house would play, but it depends on if you are playing to win or to push (while getting free drinks). It is the best time-killing, free-drink-getting, game in the house.

To correct some misconceptions, though, you pay 5% on winning bets, but nothing on losers, so that comes out to around a 2.5% casino edge, except that the house wins pushes, which happen occasionally on the up hand. If one wants to play seriously, find a table where you can afford to bank every other hand, and do so. That negates the house edge on pushes (and actually gives a reverse edge because you are winning pushes against the other players at the table).

Don't think I can do Dec. 16, but I will be there on Jan 6-8, possibly with others from this board (PM me if anyone is interested). And I may be there for the Vegas Bowl if Cal goes.

Blackjack tournaments rock. I have played in many. But learn how to count first (it's allowed) and read something on strategy, because you are playing the other players and position is everything - to the point that you may have to double down on a 16 at the end to have the best (or only) chance of winning.

Good point on the up hand draw. As for the be the bank point, don't sit at my table. Usually some Asian guy wants to be the bank. In those cases, I either sit out so he can't win much money or put 10 times his bet out there so he will really sweat and suffer if he loses. Makes me angry for someone other than the casino to want to win my money. Usually turns out a draw but I won a $500 hand that way once and the dude split.

Plus people don't like that they get a different starting hand. I normally only do it at when the table is empty, and then the dealer can tell a new player that I am taking the bank every other hand, so that I am not having to play someone for their $10 if they don't want to.

What's the house advantage in Pai Gow?
This sounds like a setup if I ever saw one.
