That looks great. I have a long list of cookbooks I want right now.
My family is having a get-together this weekend (the branch with teens is going on a Christmas cruise in the Caribbean) and I think we're having ham that my mother sent for a Christmas present to my brother. I'm bringing a killer gratin, a recipe I dug up (while looking for cookie recipes) in an old Fine Cooking. It's a sweet potato and leek gratin with pancetta. Not for the calorically shy but quite yummy.
For Christmas day, whoever is hosting usually makes a roast beef. On years when family has taken vacations right around the 25th, we've had Chinese food. It's actually nice for everyone to have the day off from the kitchen.

Do you end up using the rotisserie often or is is the kind of thing that gets dragged out very occasionally?

I am very, very fond of the xmas eve food from the place with the good shawerma.
And, do you really think there was any pause in my consumption? please. I keep a tin of cookies by the bed for the entire holiday visit.

This made me remember this gem from Overheard in New York :
Cliche Must Be French for Hippopotamus
Fat lady: Last night, I ate an entire box of cookies
Skinny lady: Uh huh.
Fat lady: Like the whole box. I mean, I sort of threw up in my sleep I think.
Skinny lady: That's--
Fat lady: I mean, there were definite cookie bits in my bed this morning. I'm such a cliche.
Skinny lady: That's just really...sad.

there are about 362 days on which shawarma makes for good eating. Xmas and xmas eve are not two of them. unless you have some very extra special, magical even, shawarma.

I have adopted the rule that I will not buy, or keep a gift, a kitchen implement that does not serve more than one purpose.
Williams-Sonoma has made a mint convincing people that a recipe is intriguing and necessitates the purchase of a mango-pit remover to make.

Rib Roast
I am salivating like a dog. My oven in my otherwise lovely house is crapola. I may have to practice making this before Christmas Eve.
Fringey, when I was a kid Christmas Eve was the big deal -- that's when we had a special home-cooked dinner and opened presents. Take-out food on Christmas Eve would be just plain wrong . . . especially since we eat take-out 5 nights a week as it is. We usually went to relatives for the ham or turkey on Christmas Day.
Now, shawarma and nice garlicky hummus and hot pita would be very nice on New Year's Eve. Or Boxing Day. Or the winter solstice.

You can do two things with a coffee maker?
Or are you trying to tell me you don't have a coffee maker?

I use a french press. Besides, every rule has exceptions. But I'm not eating mangos every day.

A toaster only really makes toast.* But toast sure is good food.**
*I did just splurge with the Hamilton Beach (name brand!) bagel-width toaster, with handy defrost capabilities ($9.99 well spent!), but for the millions of people in the country who can't afford such luxuries, I am generalizing about the only makes toast part above.
**And one of the four foods that I will willingly prepare at home instead of buying pre-made stuff at the store (Whole Foods, Burger! See asterisk one above for an understanding of how I can afford such decadence).
