careful Ty. I'm pretty sure this isn't Penske. In fact I'd go out on a limb and guess it's a GGG sock before Penske.

Exactly. And we don't need to lose another poster to boxed wine.

Apropos of nothing in particular, Tony Snow is not my favorite person, but I hope it's not colon cancer and that he's back soon.

Today's Outrage

I'm amazed that Slave hasn't posted this yet.

(German court cites Koran as basis to deny speedy divorce to woman whose husband beat her; since they were married in Morocco, it wasn't really a hardship.)

And, yes, that's an outrage.
Slave, now being a captain of industy, did indeed miss these outrages while he was out entertaining folks that Sidd would probably like to tax (and take as clients).

But Slave thanks Sidd for pointing out that Sidd is actually aware of the Islamist threat to the West, because Slave, by virtue of Sidd's prior posts, felt that Sidd somehow missed all those stories about how the Muslims would try to assert sharia over established western legal principles.

Speaking of which, after Edwards' announcement, the true story seems not to be getting much play: His wife has a high chance of dying in the next few years. Everybody is saying her cancer is "treatable but not curable". From the reports, she basically has stage 4 cancer at this point--it's spread to other parts of her body. That's not usually survivable for more than a couple of years. I realize the press doesn't want to put her on a death watch, but come on. There is a strong chance that she will die before a presidential election in 2012, so that Edwards either is dealing with her death during this race or while in the WH (if he wins). What is he thinking? Shouldn't he withdraw, and then reload for 2012 depending on how his wife does? (besides, he can get the hot widower sympathy vote then)

I agreed with Diane that I don't much like the press conference treatment of this, and what does seem to be an effort to garner press and sympathy out of it.

But she has always seemed like a neat lady to me, and I have no doubt they are doing what she wants to do. I doubt he bosses her around much. She most likely wants to do whatever she can to help him achieve their mutual ambition before she dies.

Also -- activity and engagement (i.e. campaigning) is good for her mentally and emotionally. Rest and relaxation doesn't cure cancer.

As for 2012 -- if a Dem wins in 2008 (which you have to think they have a good shot) -- Edwards can't plan to run against a sitting President. And by 2016, his time might be up.

This news is a shame. It is an ugly, agonizing death.

Everyone understands this and writes around the elephant in the room. Even the press has some semblance of humanity.

Edwards is done, and the press conference thing was creepy (though hardly surprising considering the man). I couldn't agree with you more - reloading for 2012 is the proper course.

Maybe he's gunning for another VP slot. The VP doesn't do anything anyway (unless its one in Cheney's unique circumstances), so he could tend to his wife quietly.

The sole silver lining in this is we lose the worst of the class war mongers. His "Two Americas" thing - particualrly coming from one who does what he does - was about as gag-inducing as anything I'd sen this political season (including McCain fellating Falwell at Liberty U).

Agreed, as to all of it.

If I ever get a terminal diagnosis, I am quite sure I will not keep working. I will keep busy, travelling, socializing, having fun. Not rest and relaxation, but freedom from the worry of having to make my money last more than a few years and that I need to work so that I have something useful to do down the road.

I don't know that one can have that luxury if one has kids and family.

Exactly. I'd build something like a 28,000 square foot mansion with a squash court.

I've seen six of my relatives die like dogs of cancer. Two things I can say for certain. 1. My death cert will not list cancer as the cause. 2. I won't die in a hospital. Nor will I let my wife. From every relative I've known who's dealt with losing as loved one to it, the proper course is to run things out as Burger advised, and then off yourself when you're too sick.

This also avoids having any waterheads say "It was God's will" at your funeral. Bullshit. The Fates might pick the year. I'll be picking the exact moment. And I have no intent of it being profound. Drunk and in the mindset of "Whatever - I was just another shaved monkey running around the orb for a while... It was a nice ride," is the proper exit platform.

But then, who am I kidding? I'll get run over by a city bus crossing the street drunk...*

*Already been hit by a car pretty solidly once.

How many tanning booths and manicure stations do you think he has in it?

True. Only if you're a democrat.
