Tillman

Today's news:
  • The White House said today President Bush was never told that former NFL star Pat Tillman was killed by his fellow Army Rangers at a time Army officials knew the truth, but told his family and the public that Tillman was shot by the enemy.

Lawmakers and Tillman's family raised questions at a House hearing Tuesday about whether former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and White House officials knew the death was by friendly fire, but allowed the Army to spin a false story about the way the San Jose native died.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said today that the details of Tillman's death never made it to the president.

"There's no indication that the president got any word that there was questions surrounding his death, other than what has been reported in the paper," Perino said.

A couple things:

(1) Note that Perino didn't say the President didn't know -- she said there's no indication that he was told. Well, she's his spokesperson. Was he told? But whoever wrote this story seems to have been fooled by the non-denial denial.

(2) If you were the President, and someone let you step in it by failing to tell you this stuff, wouldn't you be bullshit? Wouldn't you want someone's head? So why hasn't that happened?

I would be inclined to think the President didn't know and had nothing to do with the cover-up. But these things seem odd.

I'm not going to repeat Fringey's point. I'm simply going to ask if you are serious with this line of questioning?

To the extent people may have lied and tried to cover up their tracks, I see there being an issue.

As for the underlying story, so what? Insurgents, friendly fire, or IED, dead is dead, which he wouldn't be if he hadn't gone.

W has proven that he doesn't really give a shit about the truth. He's lied about far bigger matters. Why would he care about this?

Sure, but I wouldn't air it in public. I'd go bullshit in a private meeting, or at least a closed meeting with relevant staff. And if really super pissed tell someone to seek out opportunities they can't refuse or decide to spend more time with their family.

But if you were W, you'd express your fullest confidence in him and give him a medal.

On the other hand, and to provide you some historic context:
  • Independent counsel Robert Ray's investigation of Travelgate began in the Clinton Administration’s first term when seven members of the Travel Office staff were terminated and replaced by a company run by Clinton friends. The issue for prosecutors was whether anybody in the White House tried to cover up alleged mismanagement of the firings.

In a report[6], released October 18, 2000, Ray determined Hillary had given false testimony when questioned about the travel office firings, a crime that Ray declined to prosecute. Under oath, Mrs. Clinton flatly denied any role and denied that she had any input, but later a memo surfaced from administration chief David Watkins suggesting Mrs. Clinton wanted the travel staff fired. Watkins said there would be "hell to pay" if swift action was not taken in conformity with the First Lady’s wishes. A friend of Watkins also alleged that Watkins was told to quote, ‘fire the sons of bitches.’

And if that got you mad, you must be furious about the current scandal involving Karl Rove, the GSA, and about 15 other government agencies.

Sure. I'd tell him he's doing a heckuva job.

But I'm not W.

Funny. I thought that was the word for people who manipulated the media and lied to families to create heros to build support for a war when they couldn't put up a rational case.

Instead of using big letters to get your point across, why don't you just spell it correctly?

Hank has always found it helpful to shout at people who speak other languages when he wants to be understood.

english is a second language for you guys? that would explain a lot. and SS finally got his first "poor spelling" post in. Here all along I thought he didn't do those because he was cool, but it turns out he just hadn't progressed far enough to feel comfortable doing them. I suppose he'll have an endless barrage of arrows for me now. look out Hank!
