These were of the stripper variety.
Those padded bras and inserts aren't of much use when you get together with old friends. I mean, they just jump at you.

Sounds like overwatering to me, too. How often are you watering, for how long, and how? I use drip irrigation and water every third or fourth day (depending on how hot it is) for an hour or two. My tomatoes are all doing great--I may have cherry tomatoes by the end of next week. I have them in a hoop house to keep them warmer at night (not a problem for you, dtb) and unconsumed by the deer.
You might also try a little sprinkling of organic fertilizer, six inches or so away from the stem and worked into the dirt a little.

If anyone wants any figs, let me know. Bumper crop this year.

Calling All Gardeners!!

I am tempted to post a picture to illustrate the bizarre result I am getting, but I am afraid maybe that is a little too weird.

Sounds like some form of mold or rot, and I assume there are no visible signs above ground. Dig up and see how the roots look - if they're decaying or moldy, you've got root rot. It's also possible something is eating the roots. All these things could affect your other plants if not dealt with.
You can always place a call to the county cooperative extension agent - or track down a local 4H club (yes, I was in 4H once upon a time).

I don't think it's overwatering. They all get the same amount of water. They have drip irrigation automatically, and then I water them when it's hot (sounds like what you do).
I'm going to dig up the roots now to see if they look moldy like GGG says. I'll report back in a few minutes!!

B'n'B -- what's your assessment? Did she have work done while she was married to your almost an uncle Ron?

Look up verticillium wilt -- sounds a little like what you describe.

Roots look fine. Nothing growing on them, and they've spread out nicely (until I started digging...).
Groan. I don't know what's going on. I guess I'll have to consult my outlaw gardener.

Maybe - she'd have yellowing leaves toward the bottom of the plant if this is the case.

No idea then. Growing up, we would have doused them in several kinds of anti-fungicides, just to kill whatever it was. These days, I'm a good organic doobie and would yank them or transplant them to a sick ward section to prevent the mystery spreading.

What kind of figs?
If I can find them, I'll try to round up some fig recipes I saved last year when I thought I might actually get around to making them.

I found a great easy fig recipe last year in Food and Wine: Quarter 12 figs, cutting three-quarters of the way down. Stuff the figs with goat cheese. Roast in an oiled pan at 425 degrees for 12 minutes, until softened. Serve drizzled with warmed honey.
I believe the various Deborah Madison cookbooks I have all contain a number of fig recipes. Unfortunately, around here, their season is short and they are expensive.

At this point, no one can remember which trees are which varieties. I think there are some Brown Turkeys, though I'm not entirely sure.
Last night, several pints of fig preserves were made, and I think some of them are going to the community table at the farmer's market once the rest have been doled out to friends and relations. That was only the first batch of the season, though. I think we're going to end up with gallons of figs by the time this summer is over.
