Angela, You're a Disgrace to the Bloodsluts Empire

www.mcsweeneys.net

I'm particularly fond of this title. Even more so that it was written by a law librarian. I need a job that allows me more time to come up with winning captions for the New Yorker cartoon contest and all that other good stuff out there available on the internet.

That is all. Carry on.

Oh, God, yes. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

Reagan shot - no idea
Challenger - at work (ensuring the reelection of Governor Dukakis)
Bronco Chase -- at work; the TV in the conference room was turned on about half-way through
OJ Verdict -- at work; we assembled in the conference room to watch
Diana Crash - at work; no one assembled because it was over a weekend
9/11 - at work; we assembled in conference rooms to watch until people began going home

And, except for the Dukakis part, I'll bet this is pretty much the same list for a large part of the board.
You assume the rest of the board is as old as you apparently are then. I don't remember for most, but I remember:

Challenger - Having the tv's wheeled into the lunch room in middle school so everyone could watch the coverage (and then being sent home early).
OJ Decision - In law school, we all were glued to the tv's set up around school between classes.
Columbia - I got a phone call from my mom while I was on a walk early Saturday morning in Dallas. We were on the very edge of the potential debris field.
9/11 - Seeing the notice on the elevator on my way up to work that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center and thinking it was another little prop plane or something. Assembling in the conference room and watching the towers fall.

I also vaguely recall not knowing who Elvis was when he died. And I'm pretty sure I was at (elementary) school when Reagan was shot, but I don't have specific memories of it, other than being horribly upset for Brady during the subsequent news coverage.

ETA (because Anne reminded me) - John Lennon shot - I vividly remember how upset I was about this. I was 10 and it was the day after my mom's birthday, same year as a dear aunt died. Aunt Sue and John Lennon were the first deaths that made me understand the whole "they aren't ever coming back" thing. I listened to every single tribute that aired on my AM radio in my bedroom. Sobbing.

Challenger exploding -- 7th grade teacher cried in school -- I realize I am a cold person because I could not understand why people were upset. So a space shuttle blew up. Big deal. There are other astronauts. That's what I recall thinking at the time.

OJ Bronco Chase -- flying home from being abroad for a year wondering what the hell all the hoopla was

OJ Verdict -- working the bar at Chili's -- half the bar left in disgust immediately after the verdict

Diana crash -- I was at the Eiffel Tower at the time of the crash and learned of her death when I got an English newspaper on the plane the next day flying home

9/11 -- I was rushing to get to work, hungover. Mr. Kiss says, "ABBA you should check this out -- a plane just flew into the World Trade Center." I think I responded by kissing him on the cheek and saying, "I gotta go."
John Lennon shot - in my room doing homework

Reagan shot - no idea

Challenger crash - walking back to my dorm room from lunch so I could call my Dad and wish him a Happy Birthday before my next class

OJ Bronco chase - Montreal, checking a bus trip into their hotel. The desk clerk and I chuckled over silly Americans as we went over the paperwork.

OJ verdict - at work. They set up a TV in the main conference room. Most of us left in disgust immediately afterward.

Diana crash - at a golf course on the Cape. We had just pulled into the parking lot when the DJ broke in and made the announcement

9/11 - at work. I was more hungover than Abba, so I was very confused by all the people leaving the building as I arrived, and all the police around South Station.

Reagan: Found out at Acrobatics. Didn't care.

Challenger: Half day of junior high school. Saw it explode at my house with a friend. Was sad until I heard the "Where did Christy McAuliffe go for vacation?" joke.

Berlin Wall: Freshman year, in the dorms. My RA was floored over the news. I went to play basketball.

Princess Di: At a girl's house after cheating on my girlfriend with her. Was in a good mood.

This is great! And not only for the tidbit that Thurgreed took something called "Acrobatics" which puts him in a whole new light.

I now remember where I was when Elvis died. I was at my friend's farm, listening to ABBA and he (turned out to be gay, in case you are wondering about the ABBA) told me a bunch of Elvis jokes -- I only remember "What's green and sings? Elvis Parsely". Then we had a mock funeral and we buried some lettuce because we didn't have any parsely.

I also now remember where I was when Princess Di died. I was driving home with my husband from my sister's wedding. We're all now divorced. I blame the paparazzi.

I think it was only funny in junior high, but here goes.

Where did Christy McAuliffe go for vacation?

All over Florida.

So, how many years did they keep you in Middle School?

Ah, so it appears I was in high school. Having tv's wheeled in to the cafeteria, etc. Carry on.

OJ Arrest: At home with my roomie, trying to watch the fucking Knicks get beat in the finals. Was glued to the tv for the first 20 minutes of that stupid chase and then was just pissed I was missing the damn game.
With every other station showing that shite, I couldn't believe NBC still cut away from that game.

To photoshop mash-ups of celebrity faces. The Paris Hilton/Jessica Simpson one at the top of the page is, well, as disturbing as most pictures of those two that NFH posts here on a weekly basis.
