I'm not sure that I understand your question. Do you mean that people who make voluntary choices regarding their personal situations (amount of exercise, in your post) shouldn't complain, because they placed themselves in the situation?

I'm such a bad distance runner that I constantly am in the mid-180s to low-190s range when running. If I pick it up at the end, I'm guaranteed to hit a little over 200.

So you're saying it's very frustrating to deal with people who complain about the consequences of their own choices, and then defend those choices as necessary when someone points out that the consequences should have been expected. I just want to make sure I follow.

Two clarifications. My friend says her husband does the same thing. To train for climbing Mt. Ranier he climbs an immense indoor stair case for hours. Then whines that he is tired/exhausted.
Second, this woman stated that she is 20 years older me [can't change that] her commute wears on her [her commute is shorter than mine] in addition to the swimming 6 days a week "like a maniac" some things you cannot change, some things you can. I'm not hating on her swimming, good for her. But I also don't want to her her whine endlessly about it when she could cut a day or two out and feel better. I don't whine to her that I have kids or I work a lot. it's a seinfeldian thing. she loves to kvetch, whine, moan, complain. I finally told her that is the last thing I want to hear in the morning first thing. so negative.
p.s. re abba's knob comment. lol. totally. I don't think she should feel "drained" from that she isn't training right. just a hunch.

2. I do not get a good workout from swimming at all. I must not be doing it right, but fuck, I do not want to learn because it sucks so hard.

Most people that I know who train seriously are energized by the training and not complaining of tiredness. Sure, I feel "tired" after a long run in the sense that I don't want to immediately do it again, but I feel energized. What is her intensive training? She must be doing it wrong, or else she is a knob.

You're completely misunderstanding her question. Her question is, "Will you guys continue to pay attention to me if I can think of stuff to say that sounds like it might have something to do with what you're talking about?"
Your post translates into "Yes."

Have you found that explaining her illogic to her is an effective way to help her see the error of her ways?

The weights are so light, and are not adjustable, that you can do really fast reps and then it's more cardio. Most importantly, it's mindless, there are random groups of people to watch and chat with, and she can certainly lose some weight. And a year of it is probably cheaper, and the cost spread out more, than buying a "good" elliptical. And the kids can't be there, so once she gets out of the house, no interruptions/distractions.

No, she becomes irate with me.
Any time I stop being a doormat and confront anyone [in my mind I always think "gee if I stopped being a doormat and spoke up the person would change bad behavior or not do something that irritates me; i.e she does heavy perfume, takes long lunches, leaves early--the other woman did 10 personal calls a day had to leave because her kid was in a fight"] the person gets belligerant and defiant and refuses to listen. it's pure comedy since i've built it up in my mind that I'm a wimp and won't confront and that is why they continue their odious behavior.
I've come to the conclusion that people will do what they want and what they are allowed to get away with. and unless you are willing to go to management about it is even dubious that that would work. I'm not a narc so I don't do that.
Funny thing is she used to send me emails all caps "I AM GOING TO BRUSH AND FLOSS" that grossed me out SO MUCH that I told her to stop and she did. Even she was embarassed.

When I did the triathlon, it seemed like most people hated the swim the most. There were people in my wave that were absolutely dreading it, and some people took over an hour to swim 750 yards. One of the best athletes I know consistently comes in last in the swim when he does triathlons.
I love it. I spent most of my childhood in the pool, and I'm really glad that I'm back in the water again with the master's program. It's probably been 20 years since I've had real swim workouts and interval training and drills and all of that fun stuff. I'm in one of the slower lanes, but it's been great.

dreams
for years I've had this dream image where I'm looking at contacts and they are huge, like saucers, and I'm looking at them thinking how the fuck can i get them in my eyes. today I finally looked up a dream analysis site- any dreams about contacts mean you need to focus your attention AND dreams with problems putting them in mean you're having trouble focusing. Does looking at the lenses and knowing they can't possibly go in mean there is really no point for me to try to focus?
