Granted. Is it capturing the middle, though? Or is he doing that with the massive deficit spending?

Why not keep it in the ground so that when the ME wells go dry and they all start blowing each other up, we have somewhere to turn?

First, let me say I hate this part of the Republican "platform" more than anything.
That said, you may be overestimating the "here."
We have a burb here that is known as "gay friendly." It is the center for marches, there are bars, there are plenty of gay residents, etc.
It had a human rights inititive on the ballot a few years back that failed something like 64% to 36%.
If you are outside Manhatten or DC you might be surprised how much fear, or hate, or whatever it is, there is.

Most elections are the lesser of two evils to "the middle." Bush won't capture it, so much as Kerry will blow it.

I'm here in middle America - pretty damn near the center - and it matters to us.
Quite a bit.
And rubbing me's not going to help.

Why bother? IIRC, the oil reserves in ANWR are expected to equal no more than several months supply for the U.S. Capable at full production of reducing our dependence on foreign oil from about 56% to about 53% for a few years. We'd save more oil from raising CAFE standards within limits that the car companies could achieve today.

Sure, and it worked for Strom in '48 too. Well, almost.

Slave didn't say it didn't matter to people in the middle. He said it wasn't disappointing.
Are you saying it is?

Burger, you are now off my "neutral reasonable guy list." Its down to Atticus.
Didn't Clinton sign some anti-gay bill in 98 or 99?
The dems have campaigned on fear for the last several elections "They'll Close the Dept of Educ! They'll give all the money to rich companies- Cheney's Oil companies! etc.
What is different here, and troubling, is the Republicans have never resorted to cheap fear tactics. I am very bothered by this stance, but my point was, it probably will get votes.
"It will get votes" has always been the test the Dems apply- We've only looked at is it the right position to take- thats why we're so botherd today.
As to your Strom "thought," go Check George Wallace's showing in the 72 or 76 Democratic primaries, IN THE NORTH, where his basic point was he would stop busing.
