I built mine and the only "satisfaction" I get is my wife telling me how invasive it is to listen to regualr teleivison in surround and how ugly all the speakers look.
But it sounds pretty damn good.
I still haven't found bass speakers better than simple Bose models.
You have to get the hookup done right. I bought some really nice high end subwoofer from some small shop in Oregon, hooked it up to my reciever, turned up "What's the Difference" from Chronic 2000 and blew the damn subwoofer. I had the damn thing for maybe 10 minutes. They told me I'd probably wired it wrong. Then they told me to mail it to Oregon to have it fixed. Now its a coffee table.

I suppose I could post this on the technogeek board, but my question isn't technical. As those who read that board know, I've been thinking about getting a new car for quite some time. I was about ready to pull the trigger on an Audi A4, but then these Consumer Reports reliability stories came out earlier this week, and I hear that the Audi has below-average reliability, while the BMW 3-series is tops in its class in that regard. I really don't want to have to deal with a car breaking down. But while the BMW is a nice car and all, if I bought one I'd be a BMW owner, and I'm not sure I can stomach that.
Questions:
Should I do anything -- anything -- to avoid becoming a BMW owner?
Based on all of my prior posts, what kind of car should I be driving? (It's Friday: Hurt me.)
Who will be the first person to suggest I get a CNG Honda?

Awesome! When I was in elementary school, I used to catch cicadas in my backyard. Afterwards, I'd tie their legs to a looong piece of string (e.g., from a kite spool). Then I'd walk around the neighborhood with my tethered cicada hovering near me, and would direct* it to fly into people like NCS who would get totally grossed out and run away screaming.
Good times.
* Pulling too hard on the string would cause the legs to detach, such that the body would fly off with no legs.

1. Do you ever drive in the snow? If so, avoid the BMW. Otherwise, it's a nice car.
2. A Prius.
3. Hank.
(Go look at a WRX Sti. Zoom. You're old enough to need some fun in your life.)

Buy a SAAB. They're as nice as BMWs for a little less, and you get front wheel drive.
I almost bought a used 5 Series last year, but I heard that they are awful in snow. I think the 3 Series is even worse, unless you get the 4WD version, which jacks the price up considerably. I will say this about the 3 Series - it holds its value. Over time, they stand up way better on resale than the 5 or 7 series.
BTW - You can steal used 7s with low miles. A lot of execs lease them and throw them away at 36K. I've seen some very pretty 740i and ils on the market for great prices. The caveat with them is that they don't last as long as the 5 series or the 3s, but they are pretty damn cushy and they move...
Best of the bunch (barring the M versions) is the V8 5 series, but its overpriced.
Another great car for the long haul is the Benz E 430 or E 320. Problem with the Benz, however, is that if you're looking for quick handling like a BMW, its not there. Benzes hold the road on rails, but you don't really feel the road.
Audis have killer suspensions and perform like motherfuckers. Great handling. I had a big one for a while years ago and the goddamned thing felt like it was magnetically connected to the road. I can only imagine they've gotten miles better, and if you buy a smaller model, it'll ride that much tighter. That said, they lose their values like Cadillacs. Bad investment. You can steal them used for nothing.

I think yes. edited to add: not because it's a BMW per se, but because it would be you with a BMW.

I have no opinion on the subject, but I would turn this into a poll:
If, for some reason, you needed to purchase an automobile in the next week (say aliens abducted your current one), what is the short-list of cars you would seriously consider buying? This is not a "fantasy car league" question, so price/reliability/practicality are considerations.
Me: Mini Cooper, Prius or a '95-'99 Jag XJ series. In green, I think.
BR(the mini cooper has a pretty comprehensive and fun "design your own" on their website)C

Surely fun, but U - G - L - Y. The gearheads on the other board says there'll be a new Saab 9-2 later this year based on the same body, and I'm a Saab fan, but that body would have beat out Steve Martin for the title role in Roxanne.
Sebby, I've owned a Saab, and liked it lots, but I don't like what GM is doing to them, aesthetically speaking. The old 9-3s were good-looking -- the new ones are feh.
BRC's poll (assuming money is some object, which it is, and sticking to new cars):
BMW 325i
Audi A4
VW Passat
VW Jetta TDI
Honda Civic hybrid
Infiniti G35

So I've never run away screaming in my life. Not even when Hank showed up on my front doorstep looking for a date.
That said, I'm not sure we would have been friends.
I have been totally grossed out by caterpillar and cricket epidemics that involved there being squashed bugs covering 80% or greater of the ground. I'm not a fan of walking all over squashed bugs (and the smell! ugh), but maybe that's just me.

If those are the sorts of cars that strike my fancy, which American car should I consider?
