I read Will (and earlier have mocked him with unfair glee on this board). U.S. forces in Iraq are insufficient for that mission; unless the civil war is quickly contained, no practicable U.S. deployment will suffice. U.S. forces worldwide cannot continue to cope with Iraq as it is, plus their other duties -- peacekeeping, deterrence, training -- without stresses that will manifest themselves in severe retention problems in the reserves and regular forces.

Since 9/11, Americans have been told that they are at war. They have not been told what sacrifices, material and emotional, they must make to sustain multiple regime changes and nation-building projects. Telling such truths is part of the job description of a war president.

BTW - I don't dispute that Will's columns are often pedantic displays of his command of the English language.

I don't like O'Reilly's show myself. I just know that it is not rare for him and other conservative commentators to criticize GWB and other Reps.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Seven civilian contractors working for a subsidiary of Halliburton are missing in Iraq after an ambush on a convoy last week, the Texas-based firm and the U.S. military said on Monday.

Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, told Pentagon reporters in video conference from Baghdad the contractors were working for Kellogg Brown & Root, a subsidiary of the U.S. oil services firm run until 2000 by Vice President Dick Cheney.

NEW YORK Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has apologized to the two reporters whose audio recorders were seized during a speech that the Justice gave last week at a high school in Hattiesburg, Miss.

In a letter to Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Executive Director Lucy Dalglish, Scalia said he didn't approve of the actions by a U.S. Marshal, who seized the recorders and ordered the recordings erased. "You were correct that the action was not taken at my direction; I was upset as you were," Scalia wrote. "I have written to the reporters involved, extending my apology."

The reporters are employees of The Associated Press and the Hattiesburg American.

Scalia also told Dalglish that he would revise his policy forbidding recordings of his public speaking events to allow recording for use by print media.

"We greatly appreciate Justice Scalia's prompt response to our letter," Dalglish said, in a statement. She did express disappointment that Scalia said he would not change his policy regarding television and radio recordings.

"The electronic media in the past respected my First Amendment right not to speak on radio or television when I do not wish to do so, and I am sure that courtesy will continue," Scalia wrote.

I have seen Scarborough on Matthews' show a few times differing from the party line. Not in any strenuous way, but he does seem to be more of an objective thinker than the other talk show hosts that I instinctively lump him in with. But maybe that's just because someone else was asking him the questions. I have never seen his own show, despite the fact that I love the self-importance of the show's title.

I wish we Dems had someone as open minded as Joe, so we could somehow combat this "we're better than you guys because you guys don't disagree with the party line" theme being advanced by the admin supporters on the Board. Damn our hidebound message discipline! Damn it to hell!

O'Reilly criticises Reps, too. Not suggesting you watch his show, though. I really don't like his style even though I have the same positions he has on many topics.

I've heard Rush criticize Reps, too. And John MacLaughlin, too.

Um, me too, but I'm not sure what that gets you.

Usually Rush's critiques are involve the themes of (1) Rep. X was stupid, because he just had the Dem/Feminazi shot, and didn't boil em in oil first, or (2) Rep. X was stupid because he did [something], and that will give the Dems a marginal campaign advantage! These themes, while doubtlessly enjoyable, do not principled stands make.

Besides, calling Rush a conservative commentator is something akin to calling Al Franken a liberal commentator. They both have radio shows, and they both have political views, but really they're just satirists.

After all the shit I gave him the other day, I feel obligated to note that Scalia apologized to reporters for the federal marshals having confiscated the reporters' recordings of his public speech.

He even feels chastened enough, apparently, to revise his policy to allow such recordings by the media.

Kudos to him.
