Does this work for other things, too?
Wife: "Are you fucking my sister?"
Me: "Let me check!"
Friend: "Did you puke in my bathtub?"
Me: "Let me check!"

If you have documents to check in those cases, that's probably not a good thing.

Don't fuck with this guy. He is in a better position to fuck your career up than you are to fuck up his. He may have made partner in a boom year and he may be coasting now, but he has enough juice to survive the useless-partner-cut over the pass few years.
Just finish this transaction for him, don't kill yourself and the next time he calls tell him you can't help him because you are swamped with work in your actual practice area.

You obviously work for a partner with no juice. I had similar happen to me and my highly-juiced partner doesn't want troubled partners disrupting one of his precious worker bees and getting in the way of keeping his clients happy...he simply said that I wasn't to work with troubled partner anymore and if troubled partner tried to give me work in the future to direct troubled partner to juiced partner.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

That's pretty much what my juiceds said, without really telling me what to do. It's not like I can back out of the tranny before it's over, though, even if he did lie about the scope and really pull some sneaky shit. Regardless, it's a good lesson to learn. I've been at my current firm (in different offices) for a few years now, and I've never run into this bullshit before. I guess I was spoiled and only working for the right people. New policy is, always check up on people before I work for them.
And, actually, maybe I am spoiled at current firm, but I would take offense even if someone I really liked told me unequivocably not to work for someone else. It was that kind of territorial tomfoolery that caused me, in part, to leave my first firm, and I've never looked backwith regret.
