My eleventh grade english teacher assigned "Absolom, Absolom" by William Faulker. On the first day that we were to discuss the book, I walked in to the room, threw the book onto the table where it slid the entire length of the table, coming to rest under my english teacher's nose. I at him and said "Fourteen pages without a mark of punctuation. I am not reading this book." He gazed back at me, unmoved, and then steepled his fingers. "As you wish, Miss Brazen," he said, "As you wish."
I did not read "Absolom, Absolom" nor have I ever read anything else but Faulkner. I
want to like Faulkner, but I just can't even make myself try.
