Hotel Rwanda

So, I skipped out on work for a looooong lunch today and went to see Hotel Rwanda. I must revise my thoughts.

1. Don Cheadle was fantastic. The best performance I've seen by anyone in a very long time. If he doesn't win, it would be a real shame.

2. The fact that this movie wasn't nominated for 'Best Picture' is outrageous. I don't think it's a matter of the subject-matter making the movie, either. It was very well done. Almost had me in tears three times.

3. If you run a movie theater and you're showing Hotel Rwanda, why the FUCK do you hand out "Killer Bunnies" (or whatever) stickers when people are exiting?

4. I have no interest in seeing The Aviator. Can anyone convince me that I should?

5. Adding Chris Rock to the Oscar mix was a good idea. I will watch more than the last 15 minutes. And I hope he singles out and pisses off, Russell Crowe, that self-important jackass.

ETA: In the theater, there was a group of maybe 20-25 kids with a group of adults. I'm not sure, but I think they (or more likely their parents') were from Rwanda because I heard accents that sounded much like the ones in the movie and the adults shushed the kids at the beginning and told them that this is something they all needed to see. After the first few minutes, the otherwise rowdy kids fell into silence and watched with only a sniffle, sigh or gasp to be heard for 2 straight hours. I imagine it had quite an impact on them.
I don't typically go to espn.com for movie reviews, but I found Skip Bayless' trashing of Million Dollar Baby sort of amusing, even though I think MDB is a good movie. He has some valid points, mainly that the movie is an unrealistic boxing movie (as an aside, he names Caddyshack as the most realistic sports movie; he may be right). I noticed those unrealistic moments when I was watching, too, but they didn't bother me as much because I wasn't viewing it as a "boxing" movie.

Warning: The review gives away much of what happens in the movie. Don't read it if you plan to see MDB.
