Decorating the office

What do they mean by "decorate"? Do they mean you need to find your own art, or do they mean you need to acquire your own desk & shelves? If the later, you are hosed, but at least you can get something you like and keep it if you leave. I'd vaguely recommend antiques - much cheaper than new furniture of similar quality. Alternatively I'm sure you can get second-hand office furniture in very good shape from an office-furniture rental place for decent $$. The one thing I would suggest splurging on is your chair - you will be in it a lot, and if it hurts your back you are truly fucked.

My understanding is that, even if you furnish your own office, the firm will generally pay for a basic paint job (in whatever color you want, which can make an absolutely huge difference; after 15 years of NYC rental apartments I am opposed to white and off-white walls on humanitarian grounds).

God help you if they mean "you can finance your own floor coverings."
