Maybe they got it off a statement, although I shred my statements. Maybe they got it off some place that has my credit card information on file. Or maybe they are high tech and hacked into a site where I placed an online order recently. I don't know. They did not get the physical card, and so it was kind of scary that they managed to get the information, although I am pretty careful with it.
Considering that they used the card to buy computer equipment from Sears, the high tech hacker angle sounds unlikely. There are a lot of low tech ways to get your information without having the card. Have you rented a car recently? Some years ago there was a credit card fraud ring out of a car rental desk at O'Hare. An employee sold all the information from the rental forms to the thieves.
