Torre was a losing manager when he got to the Yankees. He was given a great team that was built by Gene Michael and Buck Showalter. He did great things with that team, but once they were gone, he hasn't done much with the highest payroll in baseball. Pitching is definitely to blame for us not going deeper, but what other manager couldn't bring the Yankees to the playoffs every year?
There are things Torre does well, like dealing with the press and taking pressure off his guys. Everything else he does is completely formulaic since '98. And he can't really manage certain types of players (see Lofton, Mondesi and Sheff).
I'm not too broken up over him leaving. I'm not sure if Girardi is ready, but why not give him a chance? I'd take him over Mattingly and LaRussa is out of it (Thank God) and hopefully so is Valentine.
