Photo Question

I have a bunch of old pictures that I want in digital format and I haven't done this before. Photographing the pictures is proving to be more challenging than I had thought it would be, but sort of works. Anyone done the CVS/Ritz Camera (for example) thing?
Have them scanned, but try to find someone a step above CVS/Ritz - the equipment will be of better quality, and be cleaned and calibrated more often.
