The first time is saw RATM was about two months after their first album was released, in a small club with a couple hundred people. The energy was raw and intense. The last time I saw them was in an arena, and it was a good show. But when they played “Killing In The Name Of,” I suddenly realized that I was surrounded by a sea of thousands of identical 20-something alt-frat boys, all shirtless and all wearing the same black skull cap, and they were pumping their fists in the air in complete unison and screaming “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” with the rehearsed choreography of a Third Reich rally. After the show, I approached one of the alt-frat boys and said, “Hey, um, do you realize that you actually ARE doing what they tell you?” He looked at me with vacuous contempt and said, “I’m an independent thinker!” Then he vomited all over his shirt.

I first saw them at a dorm party in 1992, where due to series of misadventures and some jello that would not set properly, I was blindingly drunk and puked all over the shirt of the dude I was crushing on. Sorry Miles! I have tickets to see them in El Paso in June. I have it at 50/50 on whether or not we'll make the show.
