Okay, I'm sure the watch collectors will turn their noses at this suggestion, but darn it, I think this is a good choice under the situation.
I have some nice "fancy" watches that were given to me as gifts, but frankly, I prefer something simple and stainless steel. I can't bring myself to wear the fancy watches unless it's a special formal occasion, and all the while, I'm afraid of losing it or damaging it. The problem, I find, is that the more expensive it is, the less I want to wear it, and the less useful it is. Obviously, that's just my hangup.
