Right, but you're missing the moral of the story: only after Carrie stopped sitting around analyzing Big's actions with her girlfriends and ran off to Paris with an impossibly romantic figure (one with whom Big couldn't compete, at least not until IRF showed himself to be a jerk) did Big come around.
Oh, and in the meantime he developed a heart condition and grew desperately afraid of growing old alone with nobody to look after him.
