Thank you. He's doing fine this morning and doesn't seem to miss his tail at all.
He is a former stud (ha!) and got a condition that affects former studs. This condition means that the tail is really prone to infection. He started getting infections and we did all we could but the best course was just to get rid of the source of the infection, so now he should lead a long and infection-free life.
