Tom Dowd and the Language of Music
It's a documentary about legendary recording engineer and producer Tom Dowd. I knew nothing about the man beforehand and was fascinated. I'm not even going to tell you anything about the documentary because there are surprises that are worth it.
But I tell you something that wasn't in the documentary...
Wilson Pickett is down in Muscle Shoals recording "Mustang Sally." He finishes the last take of the vocals, but the tape suddenly flies off the reel and breaks into pieces. Tom Dowd is recording the session, calmly clears the room, and tells everyone to come back in half an hour. When they return, he's pieced the tape back together by hand.
The other stories in the doc are much better. A must for any music fan.
