We've already done the road-trip CD collections, etc. So here's a slightly different question.

If you had to drive across the country, is there a particular place, thing, meal, or experience you would be sure to stop and see or have?

(I'm not thinking here of stopping to visit (say) your cousin Frank in Iowa City, primarily because having an imaginary internet friend visit your relatives would be unsettling to them, and confirm much of what they've already thought about you. Sure, there's probably some value in that -- but I have no desire to enmesh myself in your little family drama.)

Instead, I'm wondering about things like whether C2ed has a particular suggestion about the painted desert in AZ. Or if NotBob wishes to share the location of his most highly recommended Piggly Wiggly. Or if ShapeShifter has a suggestion for the best mammalian strip club in Tulsa. Etc, etc.

There's no fixed route as of yet, but know for general purposes that MapQuest tells me that in my trip from DC to LA, I should pass through PA, OH, IN, IL, MO, OK, TX, NM, AZ, and CA. Suggestions anywhere in the neighborhood are appreciated, and even ones that I can't use (like, say, Maine) would still be nice to hear about.

See you on the other side --

Another great midwestern destination: Carhenge

Slightly out of your way, but worth the trip.

I'm just trying to fill in the map for those of you living in parts of the country that will be underwater when the icecaps melt.
