I agree. Black tie optional is, as you all note, bullshit. People send it out because they think their friends and acquaintances who have tuxedos ought to have an opportunity to justify (or "amortize") the expense. It's a racket.

Coltrane should break the BS cycle, wear the black suit, and save himself the hassle and expense of arranging last minute alterations -- that seems a really pointless use of your energy and money for the sake of a party where it's perfectly appropriate to wear a black suit. You'll be there for what, three hours? Nobody notices what men wear, anyway. I'll bet some clods will show up in blue suits with buttoned-down blue shirts, rep ties, and rubber-soled shoes. Most men wearing tuxedos at black tie optional parties seem vaguely uncomfortable in a "my wife or girlfriend or crush on the chat board made me do this" kind of way, anyway.

Besides, don't you think it would be highly inconsistent for a man with a roommate to be springing for a tux?
