What I don't understand is why the Red Sox haven't gone full bore to build up. They take some good steps, but haven't gone all out. Why didn't the Red Sox throw tons of money at Joe Torre when he was expressing negative feelings towards the Yankees? Why didn't the Red Sox up the ante for A-Rod?
Steinbrenner may be a dick, but the guy has learned how to run a ball club. He does have it pretty good, with the largest tv revenues available, but even so, he know that he has to spend money, and that if he does, his team will always be in the running for a World Series title.
If there were ever a salary cap, baseball would end up like football -- constant shifts in terms of which teams are the best. (Sure, you'd have some teams that do pretty well year after year, if you have a star player or three, but overall, you know what I mean.)
