I remember an English friend telling me about a BBC hoax in the early '90s - they announced that the Gov had decided that, in the interest of furthering European integration (and safety, given the likely increase of cross border traffic in the single market), the UK would switch from driving on the left side of the road to the right. However, to ease the population into this traumatic change, it would be phased in over time: for the first 3 months of implementation, cars with odd-number-ending license plates would drive on the right on mondays, wednesdays and fridays, while cars with even-numbered plates would drive on the right on tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays, with everyone driving on the right on sundays.
Apparently they got calls all day long from bright lights who realized this was not such a good plan.
