Was this a big deal for anyone? I was in college and, at the time, it was pretty intense, especially as I had tickets to seem them over the summer (they were to headline Lollapalooza).

NPR did a retrospective on him this morning.
I was also in college, and I remember being unsurprised when I heard that he'd died because he'd been recovering from an overdose earlier that semester. But I remember thinking that it sucked a lot.
Eddie Vedder's obituary in the LA Times was really good, I thought.
