Of course, the article is clear that the kid didn't make his own decision about his hair. His parents let him do it as a reward, so the principal was undoing the parents' parenting decision.

Either we're saying the same thing, or we're miles apart. He was allowed to make his own decision about his hair ("Dad, I've been good; I want a mohawk."). That is more discretion that most kindergarteners are given. Everything a six-year-old does, he does at the sufferance of his parents. I don't put it beyond the realm of "his decision" merely because his parents could have said "no" but instead said "okay."

I'm more concerned about either the father or the principal lying here than I am about some blue hair.

Fair enough. If the principal is lying, someone should put the hurt on him, like his boss. I'm a freakin' plaintiff's lawyer, and even
I think that a lawsuit would be a waste of society's resources here.

I think they're just teaching the kids to be vain at that place.

You've never been to Auburn. That place is home of the Tonya Harding white-trash hairdo. So if it's vanity, it's misplaced. Not all parts of California are style central. Trust me on this.
