The Swan also is just the public face of a rapidly approaching future predicted by so many science fiction writers - the ability to alter appearance at will, change sex, shape, colors, body art, etc., i.e. freeing humanity from the constraints of the human genome, to do what they wish with their own bodies. The possibilities are virtually unlimited.

The first steps are going to be halting. Some otherwise sad and pathetic people will suffer facial tics and bad boob jobs in an effort to be like Pam Anderson (hopefully without the Hep C), and some genetic experiments will undoubtedly go awry, but the first organ transplants had a poor success rate too.
