I've had this happen to me too. The Flight Attendants will tell the gate agent "Hey, we've got room for one more here" and then tell me I'll need to hold the Brazenette on my lap. I just pull her boarding pass out and tell them to move along.
I want my kid strapped down if we're hitting any turbulence, not bouncing around the cabin like a beach ball.
