Watch some drunk fuck assault his wife? In my view, he did exactly the right thing. Suspending him for protecting his family is asinine.

I agree. Of course Stern will say that whatever fine and suspension he gives him will be because he wants to encourage players to alert stadium security to handle such matters. Stern likes bright-line rules (like the automatic suspension for leaving the bench during a fight -- even though there are plenty of scenarios where it actually makes sense to do so). He's simply not going to tolerate players going into the stands.
The smart thing to do would be to give him a one game suspension and a minor fine. It's not going to be a trend unless they do something stupid like have a separate section in each stadium for players' families. If they do that, every fan will know exactly which people are related to the players and you definitely don't want that. At most, they should have a box for every players' use. And if you're a player's wife and you choose to sit down amongst the crowd, you will do it at your own risk.
That said, security should be all over any idiot who is acting in a menacing way towards
anybody in the stadium. What the fuck are the ushers for anyway? They should have alerted security as soon as that jackass started acting the fool.
