There are also dozens of in-house attorneys that are looking for new outside firms. To be invited, and be at the nice place, they have to agree to interview X firms, and have to be seriously looking for help. I guess my first thought is the in house guys will be going through the motions, trying to get done with the required interviews so they can get to the golf course. OTOH there are some great potential clients that go- if they are serious it might be great.

Anyone hear ever heard anything pro/con about other's experiences at this type thing?
Not really. This idea of an arranged job-fair-type-of-firm-interviews sounds kinda weird. The patent groups I've been involved with at other firms haven't ever gone to those sorts of things. In my experience, a company needs new counsel, they reach out to their network of firms they know, and/or interview the bigger names. I suspect that your inclination (that it's largely a boondoggle, though lightning might strike) is on target.
