We don't have to pick up the phone, do we (though I admit it would be rude not to answer the door)?

(Edited to add, we all have our unpopular causes, don't we? If we don't want government telling us what we can and can't do in the bedroom, why should government tell us who we can or can't call on the telephone or drop by to see?)
 | No. I normally do not answer the door when I am home alone. shit happens. However, you do not have caller id on your door and so must drop whatever you're doing, physically walk to the door to see who it is. And when it's a guy selling alarms and you have an obvious alarm sticker on your door, that's annoying.
Especially when it's every day (when you move into a new neighborhood). Understanding that when you're at home, you're doing one of 2 things - relaxing, or household chores (cooking, cleaning, fixing) and what's worse, is when you do open the door these people will not leave in a timely manner. They are trained that no does not mean no.
That said, sometimes you can't always know if it's a neighbor. Some people live blocks away. A woman who I didn't know came to the door asking if I'd seen her daughter (4 years old) who had "disappeared." I don't mind this - or the cop who came with her picture later. But I do mind the neighbor who came to my door and wanted me to sign a freakin petition so that she could break the CC&R's to run a business out of her house.

You do that a few times a day when you're right in the middle of whatever you're doing and it irritates people. But what would you know - you're a sock and why do I always get sucked into talking to socks? |

 | So even assuming I'm a sock, I think (and I'm pretty sure I'm readying you right here) you'll defend my right to sock but not my right to knock on your door. Isn't socking annoying? |

 | I've always understood that a beard for a lesbian is a merkin. But that could be an alt.showbiz.gossip term.

 | I can say with honesty I never heard the word merkin until it was mentioned on this board.

So that would be a big old no.

And since I am watching Will and Grace I have to ask, what the hell were they thinking putting her in that dress that shows off her chest. Shouldn't you have a chest before you show it off? |

 | It is an eternal mystery why they dress her like that. I would suggest that we start a collection to buy her some cleavage, but she already has more money than me. (I know no one has more money than you). |

How do those people get anything done with no lights in their workplaces? Is there some kind of permanent brownout situation in Las Vegas and Miami?

 | It's not just Vegas and Miami. They're following the trend set by our esteemed president pro tem , Walter Sobchak, and his immediate predecessor, Capt. Willard. You see, they're very energy-conscious in a White House not run by oil companies (i.e., a fictional one). |

 | The West Wing is marginally lighter. Plus, on the West Wing they aren't examining trace evidence and stuff. Don't all those CSI people have headaches?

Maybe it's a marketing ploy by the bigger screen TV manufacturers -- convincing us all to buy bigger TVs in hopes of being able to make out what's going on.

Will I get kicked out of Texas if I put chili over macaroni? I learned it in college from the most whitebread midwestern guy I've ever met -- but it's tasty.

I almost posted the chili thing anonymously, but decided to be brave. I'll be looking out for the lynch mob tonight though.
