My son suggests wandering Jaffa and hitting the beach (not in jaffa, the main beach)

Cool, thanks. Am staying not far from the beach and looking forward to running on the boardwalk.

Mezze in Jaffa is extraordinary, including the breakfast shakshuka of which Hank speaks. Arabic cuisine on Israeli budgets. I don't remember where we went, unfortunately, but our local friends filled the belly and it was happy. If given an option, skip Israeli wines and get Palestinian or Lebanese ones, though I think you may have trouble getting the choice if you're in Israel proper.

Report from China and Thailand travels: Thailand was a sad country, filled with extremes of wealth and poverty and an extraordinary number of dissipated obnoxious westerners looking to take advantage. the highlight of the trip was likely a dinner we had in a little pavilion on the river next to the royal villa - the main palace was taken over by the government 50 years ago but this villa and a few others remain in the families' hands. It was right smack in the middle of much of the history of the city, and we got a very detailed set of stories of the last three hundred and fifty years in that spot. Shanghai was extraordinary; I may have an big deal there next year, and I'm going to plot to try to spend more extended time there then.
